Marital Status and Homeownership
Married People Tend to be Homeowners
Married couples are more likely to buy homes than single people. This is largely to the dual incomes households with married couples generally have. Expensive downpayments are considerably easier to make when two people can contribute to them. Married couples also tend to be more interested in settling down and capable of taking on the extra responsibility of homeownership than singles.
Homebuying Trends for Singles
In the early 1980s, single men and women bought homes in equal numbers, collectively comprising 20 percent of all U.S. homebuyers. This has completely changed over the last three decades, however; single women now buy homes twice as often as men and account for 20 percent of all U.S. homebuyers. The reason behind this shift is unknown, though certain members of the RealEstate.com team speculate it is due to male fears about commitment.
