Great Backyard Bird Count!  February 15 – 18, 2013

Great Backyard Bird CountCalling all birders!  Your help is needed for four days, 15 minutes each day, for the Great Backyard Bird Count, which is taking place February 15-18, 2013.  Here is a chance to make a difference doing something you enjoy: watching and counting birds in your backyard!  This event takes place across the continent so you will be doing something in unison with many other birders to help give a picture of what is happening in the world of our feathered friends.

This count helps scientists and bird enthusiasts to get a better picture of what is happening with the bird populations during the winter months.  Such a picture cannot be gained without the help of bird enthusiasts of all ages all across the continent.

All that is required is that you sign up on line and devote a minimum of 15 minutes per day to count the birds you see in your backyard, a nearby park or any place you choose.  You do not have to be an expert; you just have to have a desire to look for birds and share what you see.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual event led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, with Canadian partner Bird Studies Canada and sponsorship from Wild Birds Unlimited.

The information gathered during these four days is very helpful in understanding what is happening with birds across our continent from year to year.

Gloria  Thanks for the reminder - I completely forgot about it.  It is simple for me to do since our home borders woods and we have multiple bird feeders to attract them

Gloria, I never thought or heard about this before, but it is a great idea Cornell came up with. Wish I was at my house in Illinois for this...there aren't that many great looking birds in my Alabama neighborhood.

Ray, Thank you!

Rebecca, Thank you for passing on the word about this!

Kristin, I was not able to commit to the count, but trust many were involved!

Joan, It is a fun way to enjoy nature!

Karen, I bet you see some great birds being close to the woods and along the path birds take as they migrate.

Joy, That is a great idea!  Will have to check that out.

Sharon, Wow! Mark your calendar for next year!

Nick, I bet you have hummingbirds and other interesting birds being you are in a warmer climate!

Thanks everyone for stopping by and commenting!

Gloria
