A cluttered house equals a cluttered mind?

Somewhere, I heard that a cluttered house equals a cluttered mind.    I've found this saying to be highly motivational in my attempt to keep a tidy house.    When I find myself tempted to leave the bed unmade, leave the dishes undone, or buy some cute knick knack; that saying goes through my mind.   I guess I have this fear of people thinking that I actually have a cluttered mind.   Hmmm.....maybe I do?  Anyway,

Any real estate broker or home stager is going to tell you clutter is bad.

According to The Practical Encyclopedia of Fung Shui by Gill Hale (Lorenz 1999):

“Clutter is a state of mind….Useless kitchen gadgets, presents we hate or have outgrown, inherited objects which fear of embarrassment or guilt will not let us part with, and endless list of other items” clutter our lives.

In Colorado, we’ve had cold weather for since last October.    My goal this weekend is to give Goodwill Industries any cold weather clothes that I have not worn in the last five months.

Why wait to list your home for sale before you start getting rid of some of your clutter?

Sincerely,

I listed a home around Christmas once Sondra and the wife had so many holiday knick knacks buyers could not see the view of the rooms. It took convincing by her husband to de-clutter and put some items into storage. Decluttering not only is a prime rule for staging, but it frees up your mental energy to find things and the organization shows an ordered mind. Now there is a quote that says, "A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind" so in that regard I am most healthy LOL. Good luck with your Goodwill donation work. Very helpful to others... Also, if you are a natural pack rat what are you gonna do? You can't fight your true nature.

Sondra-Then part of my mind must be cluttered because it seems I can never completely keep my bedroom uncluttered. Rest of the house is fine. I leave the bedroom til last and sometimes by then I don't feel like doing anything. My woman cave is even more so at the moment. It is a work in progress without much progress. Too many places to keep neat.

Sondra - I feel the same way and literally get anxiety when my home gets messy. I think we all have too much stuff. I know if I sold my home I would stage it and store 30% of my furniture. After all, I'm not showcasing my decorating, I'm showcasing my home! Now I'm off to clean, lol. Enjoy your weekend!

Sondra,

I have known people who create in a state of clutter, and they do magnificent work...When I had to write papers in grad school, I would always clean the space iaround me, before sitting down to write...we are all different.  A

We are currently decluttering, because we are going to sell our house this spring/summer. Now if I can just get the kids to help keep the house clean!

This is great advice, Sondra. I'm in the process of decluttering now. I have a nice pile of stuff to donate to The Shelter Shoppe.

Clutter seems to have a life of its own in kitchen cabinets.  Every home seller should become determined to eliminate household clutter.
