February 14th: National Organ Donors Day
I was so busy Thursday, I didn’t have time to get this blog out. However, on Valentine’s Day I received this email from Barbara, the recipient of my kidney:
“Today is my 3 month anniversary since my kidney transplant. What a day to celebrate Life and Love. To all those who have made a difference in my new beginning, especially Kris, I say bless you and heartfelt thanks for words, prayers, actions and encouragement. My kidney is doing great and I can't even describe how awesome it is to have a 2nd chance at life. I am getting stronger, walking on a treadmill, driving and so much more.
I think back to when I got the news that I needed a kidney transplant and how afraid I was. My brother had died waiting for a kidney that never came. However, I would never go through that because as soon as Kris learned of my situation, she went and took a blood test that determined we were a match. She called me from the hospital and said, “Barbara, I have your kidney!” I never had to worry if I’d go on dialysis or die waiting for a new kidney.
In addition, it was a year and a half before I reached kidney failure and Kris never wavered during this long ordeal. She retook all the tests (and there were many), never complaining and always lifting my spirits reassuring me that she was holding onto my kidney until I needed it.
February 14th is not only Valentine’s Day, but National Organ Donor Day and I’m filled with gratitude for Kris' selfless gift that gave me a new life.”
My hope is that Barbara and my story will give hope to those waiting for a kidney and educate family, friends and strangers on how safe kidney donation really is. This has been one of the best experiences of my life and I’ve never had any regrets; the opposite in fact. What’s more profound and meaningful than to save someone’s life?!
