The first settlers arrived in 1825, and named the township in honor of the first American settlement at Plymouth Rock where some of them had lived. Attracted by the land act of 1820, which made property available at $1.25 an acre, the first settlers arrived here in 1824. The first home was built in what is now the city in 1825. The first actual people to settle in Plymouth Township, were Allen and William Tibbets. They had bought 800 acres of land and settled on them, in the latter part of 1824. Others soon joined, but it wasn't until the Spring of 1825, that a sufficient number of settlers formed a real community.
From the turn of the century until 1958 Plymouth MI was the air rifle capital of the world. More bb guns were manufactured here than anywhere else during those years and part of the original factory still stands!
