When Mayors Scott Govitz and Tom Winarski and Judge Gary Allen sat down beginning in 1997 to discuss creating an endowment fund to benefit Gladwin County, none of them probably guessed that the fund which started as part of the Midland Area Community Foundation (MACF) in October of 1997 with $20,000 and now, as of Dec. 31, 2012, the balance is $803,619. When the Gladwin County Endowment Fund started, there was no money to be handed out,but the Midland Area Community Foundation took Gladwin County on as an equal partner, making grants available from their unrestricted fund to local organizations. With over $800,000 now in the fund, that means that there is currently $22,827.94 worth of spendable cash that will be made available through grants in 2013. Over $60,715 in grant awards has been distributed to Gladwin County projects from the fund since its inception to 19 different organizations. Organizers hope to reach their goal of $1,000,000 in the Gladwin County Endowment Fund by the end of 2014, and they are hoping the community will help them meet that goal by coming out to their Souper Challenge Fundraiser March 2. Join organizers on Saturday, March 2 for some incredible soups and breads while helping raise money for the Gladwin County Endowment Fund. The Souper Challenge will run from 5-8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall (751 S. M-18), Gladwin. Area restaurants will be providing soups and breads to sample, and participants will be able to vote for the ‘best soup in the county’. Cost is $10 per person. Tickets are available at the door or from any member of the Advisory Committee. They include Terry Brokoff, Chair; Bob Killian, Vice Chair; Pam Cingano, Secretary and MACF Grant Committee; Gary Allen; Amy Cote’; L. Scott Govitz; Sam Howard, MACF Financial Board; Dirk Presidio; and Tammy Roehrs. The committee is also looking for sponsors to help defray the cost of the event. For more information, or to become a sponsor, please contact one of the committee members. Restaurants bringing soup include Beaverton Tavern, Family Diner, Mack’s Menu, Pepper Mill, Piper’s Pub, Family Tree, MidMichigan Medical Center, Mid Michigan Community College, Riverwalk Grill, The Camp, The Hearth, and Woodland Diner.
