Crape Myrtle Murder!

By
Real Estate Agent with Results Realty

It is that time of year again when Crape Murder happens. There's NO REASON to trim the crape myrtle trees back to the knuckle. We quit pruning ours years ago and our trees are prettier than all the crape myrtles that have been pruned. I made this video a couple of years ago. At this time of year I always see the poor pruned trees. It is time to stop the Crape Murder!!

Marchel, thanks for this tip. I don't have any crape myrtles but I hope to soon. I will remember this.

I totally agree. We never do this. This is not to say that we do not shape ours up some, but that is CRAZY!

Neil Sperry talks about this in Dallas on his gardening show. You are right.

Hi Marchel, How nice to see you again blogging. You have been missed. How are things in Spring Texas? So glad you stopped by. We have many Crape Myrtle's here around Balboa Park and they never seem to have been cut back.

Marchel, No crepe myrtles in our corner of Ohio, always enjoyed their blooms when we lived in the South.

Marchel,

It makes me sad to see a beautiful tree hacked back to 3" or 4" calipers, and it is certainly that time of year.

A local office park landscape assassin cut about 40 crape myrtles lining the entrance back to 18" off the ground a couple of years ago, and killed them all.  The dead stumps remain and look like WWI tank traps.

Forget gun control.  We need chain saw control!

Hi Marchel,  I so agree!  Some people are trim happy.  I hate to see a man with pruning shears in his hands! :)

Hi all, Thanks for coming by.  I don't come over here too often but it is so nice to see friendly faces.  I wish the crape murder would stop but it is alive and well in my area.  I am still driving by these poor scalped trees.

Well I could not find the video.... but I could barely watch it anyway... I feel the same way you do about them being cut back to the knuckle. I have six that are aligned along the eastern side of my driveway. They are about 30' tall and are a nice shade for my cars. I will never cut them back.
