The Story of Moxie the Bear...is a White Mountain New Hampshire tale.

By

You may have to be from the North East to have the slightest clue about what Clark's Trading post is.

But one thing it isn't is a prison for wild animals. I have often written about Clark's and other "Attractions" that are located in my home town. Many are State parks...hikes and yes a few tourist venues. But Clark's is different, and I'll tell it from the stand point of a lost bear...with little chance of survival. Here We go the "STORY OF MOXIE" starts in the woods of Vermont with an abandoned bear, who if nature had taken it's natural course wouldn't have lived to tell this tale.I used to see the "cubs" walking on a leash from across the street from the trading post...back to the pens and family homes of the Clark's. Working on the Forth Generation of Family members...turned bear trainers - you can see the commitment 365 days a  year.

While I believe in the State Motto “Live Free or Die” saving a baby bear from a death sentence does not apply to that same sentiment. Thanks to the Clark Family for the great Attraction - which I visit every year and thanks for saving Moxie and so many others

When can I drive Papa? Like every bear in the family you'll learn in time there Moxie.

It's always a good time for a Picnic at Clark's - But I suggest you keep an eye on our Lunch (and picnic basket)

This shot was taken in 2010...Moxie was 25 years old then (Spooky is along for company)...most bears in the wild never reach this life span. Pretty good for a sick orphan bear found in the woods...don't you think?

It's not all man made attractions, far from it- if you hike, bike, ski, kayak or camp this is a great place to live.

Lincoln New Hampshire is 95% Federal and State forest land leaving just a mere 5% for all other living and working activities. The Flume Gorge (shown above) is Part of the Franconia Notch state park and I visit that beautiful natural wonder at least once a month. Loon Mountain ski resort is mainly located on Leased land from the Federal U.S. Forestry service and I try to ski every week during the winter season, Lincoln-woods accesses the Pemigewasset wilderness area as well as the Appalachian Mountain trail. The Kancamagus scenic highway starts in Lincoln and heads over a high mountain pass eventually leading to the east edge of the state and Conway NH. Sure there are some other “attractions”…the Whales Tale water park; zip line adventures and lost river caves are just a few. But what makes this area of the White Mountains so special for me and many of the second home owners who have found there way to this little valley is: this Place has “MOXIE”.

Tammy...the Clark Family doesn't worry too much about people trying to take the bears home with them...or climbing over the fence in to the Bear pens.

Bill...

everyone takes their dog for a walk but seeing a baby bear on a leash walking down the street is really something. This one is a peeping tom.

Where ever you are, that's where I'll be!

Hi Steve, What lovely memories your post brought back for me.  My family and i visited your beautiful area of New Hampshire several times when the children were young.  We would always do a leaf-peeping trip in October and the Franconia Notch area was one of our favorite areas to visit.  The Kancamangus Highway must be one of the most beautiful roads in the entire country!  I was so sad when I read that The Man in the Mountain had collapsed. Amazingly, we never visited Clark's Trading Post.   I hope we'll have the opportunity to come again. If we do, Clark's will definitely be on our list to visit.

Steve,

Your part of the country has a lot of wildlife and a population that respects it and wants to preserve it.  It is so easy for wildlife to be pushed out due to development and "progress".  I hope that the United States in general has moved into a more protective stance on our wildlife.

I also hope that those taht are not used to being that close to willife, do respect it and that the fact that it is "wild".  Our state re-introduced the black bear into Southeast Oklahoma about 28 years ago.  Now they have a bear hunting season.  I hate to see that, but it's the way we evolve.

Steve,

Now I'm home sick for what I always felt was my true home. While working and living at Wyonegonic Camps in Denmark, ME for several years and sending my son over to Winona Camps in Denmark, ME, I spent almost all of my free time with or without my kids (while they were at camp) in your neck of the woods. When they were campers, and later became Counselors they explored the mountains and all the beautiful places you describe in NH on a regular basis. The Kancamangus is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth. I went up and down that HWY more times than any other place in New England. I felt my passion for life in all those places you mentioned in your last paragraph of the story. I walked the Flume numerous times, my son learned Rock Climbing at Cathedral Ledge, and we all climbed the White Mountains and have been blessed with a lifetime of great memories.

Your story about Moxie is precious. I had to share your blog post with my son and daughter because I know they will appreciate it as much as I did. You made me so happy this evening. Your story gave me such a big lift after such a long day and now I'm yearning for a trip back to NH to visit all those beautiful places you are fortunate to visit every day!

I love your story about Moxie. It should be featured in AAA Magazine, Outdoor Living, or Yankee Magazine (if they are still in business). You make a great journalist and you definitely touched my soul today.

THANK YOU!

Patricia...your comment more than makes up for the time I put in to this piece, about half of the Photos are from Clark's Trading post. They have a lot of fun attractions there - along with the bear show, I recommend making a day of it - if you get the chance. The other photos were taken by me in and around Lincoln NH where my office is.

Thanks again for the wonderful feed back - you are too kind.
