Breck Snowflake Challenge: snow sculptures in Breckenridge
Did January’s International Snow Sculpture Championships inspire you to pick up shovels, picks and saws and transform a simple block of snow into a work of art? Perhaps you’re yearning to see more snow sculptures lining the streets of Breckenridge. Fear not, your opportunity is just around the corner.
The annual Breck Snowflake Challenge is back! Started in the ‘60s by a group of locals desiring to pay homage to Ullr, the Norse god of snow, the Breck Snowflake Challenge was the precursor for the now world-renowned International Snow Sculpture Championships. Lost in the transition, however, was the ability for anyone, regardless of experience, to imagine and create their own snow masterpiece. Thus the Breck Snowflake Challenge was re-born several years ago offering to anyone and everyone an opportunity to compete.
Each of the dozen or so sculptures has an assigned place in front of one of the Main Street, Breckenridge shops or restaurants and just as with the pros, the entrants work day and sometimes night to bring their visions to fruition. Though competitor experience is not required, pedestrians in town will be wowed by beautiful and imaginative creations that far surpass the average, garden-variety snowmen.
Set to begin March 4th, there is still time to grab a few willing souls (actually there is no limit to team size-so grab a dozen friends!), draw up some ideas, and enter the 2013 Breck Snowflake Challenge. Not only are participants rewarded with a sense of accomplishment after packing their own snow blocks, designing and executing their creations, but they may even have heavier purses at the end of the five day long event. The top four teams win cash prizes!
