Breaking Through Writers' Block

Real Estate Agent with Samsel & Associates 0790808

We've all been there.....That urgency knowing that you need to write a blog post, but the complete absence of any ideas. Nothing seems interesting, nothing motivates you. All you want to do is eat Peeps and flip channels....well, that might just be me.

Here are 2 blog posts to write when you've got the dreaded writers' block - guaranteed to get your writing juices flowing, so to speak.

  1. Market reports. No creativity required. All you need is your local MLS and Excel. While not necessarily fascinating writing or reading, market reports are a critical component of what we do as real estate professionals - we provide information to the public about how the market is doing.
  2. Tell a story about some glitch that happened in one of your listings or showings or prospecting phone calls. Any story - it doesn't need to be earth shattering - just tell it. And, in telling your story, you'll get your blogging neurons firing and more ideas will come to you. They will. I promise. Trust me, ok?
  3. Write a post informing your audience of some aspect of real estate that you know more about than they do. Here are 30 ideas to get you started:
  • discrimination laws (geez, there's enough there for dozens of posts)
  • fiduciary responsibility
  • types of agency
  • writing a CMA
  • types of real estate licenses in your state
  • requirements for real estate licensure or broker licensure in your state
  • property disclosure laws in your state (we did a fun one on stigmatized properties/hauntings)
  • types of ownership - joint tenancy, tenancy in common, tenancy by the entirety\
  • title search and title insurance
  • lien priority
  • chattel, fixtures, and real property
  • curb appeal
  • staging
  • what's in a contract
  • components of a listing agreement
  • how to choose an agent
  • co-ops vs condominiums vs time shares
  • types of mortgages
  • mortgage pre-approval and mortgage commitment
  • credit scores
  • flood insurance
  • Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Ginnie Mae
  • what's in a HUD
  • essential components of a lease
  • evicting a tenant
  • real estate taxes
  • what determines the value of a home
  • zoning laws in your town
  • asbestos
  • lead based paint
The cure for writers' block is, ironically, to write. We hope we've given you some food for thought - good luck!

I guess there are a lot of topics to write about, but one has to be in the mood for a particular subject to write about it, well, at least I do.

The best thing to do is just sit down and start writing.  You can revise and edit later.  You have given some great ideas to people started!

Great list Jean and Wayne, when I am at a loss for what to write about, a quick glance at my overfull email inboxes will find something to comment on, and before I know it I have a blog written.
