Have You Read The Sunday Paper?

By

I used to work in the Bronx and the office was right in Co-Op city where I lived. It was a beautiful place. 35 high-rise buildings ranging from 24-story to 33-story on 320 manicured acres along Hutchinson river, beautiful green lawns, trees, flowers…

Julia, a volunteer, a lady in her 70s, lived not more than 10 minutes slow walk, but she was taking a bus to go home. It surprised me, as she was fit, and went to a gym, so I asked her why she simply wouldn’t walk home?

- Haven’t you read the Co-Op City Times? Someone was accosted in Co-Op City…

Hmm, with 55,000 residents things happen. Julia has lived in Co-Op city since the 70s, and I asked her whether she ever had a problem there.

- Oh, no…

Last Sunday I was on I-95 going to meet an old friend in Miami, and I received a text from the investor: "Have you read the Sunday Paper?"

Turned out there was an article about investors who are buying houses and then renting them out, and not selling for the next 2-3 years. Why is the fuss? I have been telling it to him for the last 6 months, and he kept saying that he only wants to flip.

What? he want to buy and rent? Because he finally believed me? No? Oh, it is because it was in the Sunday paper?

What is wrong with us? We would not buy a house when we need it because the paper says it is bad, bad, bad... And then we buy like there is no tomorrow, because the paper say "the best time to buy is now"...

Should we allow the paper, whether Sunday, or other, dictate us how to live our lives? Don’t read the paper if it makes you paranoid. Imagine living 30 years in fear, that someone would one day stop you and take your wallet with $10 in it.

Haven’t we paid more to fear? Hasn’t it robbed us of our normal lives? Haven't we done things that we shouldn't simply because of the media hype?

Don’t read the freaking papers.

Have life. Normal life...

All I have to do is read some of the FB posts to know that folks are whipped into a frenzy about what they read in the paper, online and hear on Fox News.

Jon, the media has a way of turning the most minor incident into a major negative event. Unfortunately, a lot of people believe what they read in the newspapers.

As I recall, the media played a huge part in the recent housing bubble, telling everyone now is the time to buy because prices are going up and won't stop. It seems folks have short memories, and then of course, there is the millenium generation who would never open a newspaper, even if they knew what it was, and they do get their news from the internet.

The media is all about hype. That's what keeps them in business.

Marte - I am not going to change people, but at least sometimes I use the written word, as it adds weight to what I am saying, and people do not believe it.
