Come Walk With Us
Everyone knows that walking can warm you up on a chilly day. But, did you know that you can help to help warm a whole bunch of other people, just by walking? Well, you can, and it’s been going on for the past 23 years. The 24th Annual Walk for Warmth starts at Meriden’s First Congregational Church at 10:00am and winds about 2 miles through several city streets, including Camp Street, West Main Street, Cook Avenue, and Hanover Street, before ending back at the church approximately 45-50 minutes later.
Helping Those in Need
Sponsored by New Opportunities of Greater Meriden, the walk raises funds to help those in need of assistance in paying their energy bills and who don’t qualify for state or federal aid. Many who receive assistance are elderly or have insufficient income to be able to pay the high costs of heating their homes. Residents of Meriden, Wallingford, Berlin and Southington all benefit from the program, which has a goal this year of raising $35,000 after collecting $24,500 in donations last year.
Apres Walk
After the walk is over, people can gather back at the church where refreshments, raffles, an auction and entertainment for the kids will be waiting for them. The weather outlook for Saturday is for mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the low to mid 40’s, so come down for a nice walk with friends and help those less fortunate stay warm during the chill of the winter.
