The Charm of Yesteryear in the Irvington Neighborhood

Okay, so this is a curb alongside the street - typical it's filled with Portland rain water this time of year.

The nice reflections of trees . . . and all that . . .

Notice the metal ring?  Know what the metal ring thingy is?

I'll wait . . .

Give up?

It's a horse hitch!  In the days of yore, this is where you'd hitch the reins of your horse and/or horse drawn buggy so they would't wonder off -- you'd hitch up to the metal ring.

Many of the neighborhoods in Portland proper have the rings still affixed to the curb, you won't just find them in the Irvington Neighborhood, but I happen to be here today.

Some places have "gouged out" the hitch.  People would think the horse hitch was a trip hazard -- YEAH, and the gouged out section of curb isn't?!?

I love Portland neighborhoods and every time I see the horse hitches curbside I get all nostalgic.  Today I had my camera . . .

So cool!  I love history and learning new things.  Thanks for the history lesson about Portand and this neighborhood.  Next time I'm in my hometown (Wichita) I'll ask my relatives if they've seen these?

How cool that some of them are still there.  None are left here.  The curbs and sidewalks have all be replaced

Carla, this is pretty cool stuff!  People who live in this area must be relived that they have a place to tie up their horses!

Carla,  The horse hitch is so cool. I cannot imagine anyone removing one!  There is so much history that is attached to it.  Trip hazard ... come on! So glad you had your camera with you today.

Carla - I also live in a historic town and love these little reminders of what it was like livng in the early 1900's! I wonder if someday people will find old parking lots and say, "this is where people used to park cars - imagine driving a car?" lol.

Hi Pat . . . as you can see from the photo above, yes, they are very relieved!  ;-)

Hey Kathleen -- people are so overly cautious.  Many of the hitches still remain.  I love seeing them.

Hi Larry & Sheila . . . so now when you're visiting Portland, you'll be in the know!

Hey Kristine -- I also think that underneath our modern-day asphalt roads, you'll find bricked paved roads.  Portland was so charming back in the day.  And I like your future-visions!
