The Problem With Active Rain Groups

By
Real Estate Technology with Home Value Leads

WTFI've been exploring groups a lot more recently, trying to find some good ones to join. Unfortunately, there is a problem with Active Rain groups.

So many groups seem like a wasteland of postings that have absolutely nothing to do with the group itself. Sure, some groups are intended for that exact purpose, but not all of them. For instance, take the "Power Of Active Rain" group. From the description of the group: "Stories about how AR has helped you or someone else, both in personal and/or business are welcome here. In the spirit of keeping to topic, all others will be removed." Ummm that isn't happening. I know these groups cannot be monitored 24/7, but the first page comes complete with 10 different blog posts that are not on topic for the group - A market report is in there, a post on the correct way to say Boise, a technology question, a post on various designations... You get the picture.

Finding a group isn't that easy either. The search function doesn't work really well to find appropriate groups. For instance, I am working on getting more involved with video blogging, so I did a search in the groups for "video." Up pops all kinds of vendors who have Active Rain accounts, the testimonials on the products pages, etc. Not a single group popped up in the first 20 results. Do a search for "Dallas" and you get 9 different people's profiles and 1 article. Again, not a single group. And I was searching on the GROUPS page where it says "Search For Groups". Did you know that there are over 8400 different groups? I'm willing to bet that most of those are not even active.

Looking back at some of the groups that I am a part of, I see that I am just as much a part of the problem as anyone. I will be going back through my posts and editing my group settings on some of them. There is no reason that a market report should show up in an SEO group or why a listing should be in the Active Rain Newbies group. To those in the SEO groups I'm in, I apologize and will be correcting the issue next week.

When you go to write your next blog post, think carefully when you are deciding which groups (if any) you post to. Remember that posting to as many groups as possible doesn't win you any bonus points. Some posts may not be appropriate for ANY groups. Don't try to foce it into one. Don't contribute to the problem with Active Rain groups.

IF YOU ARE A PART OF A WELL ORGANIZED AND WELL MODERATED GROUP THAT STAYS ON TOPIC, PLEASE POST A LINK HERE FOR OTHER'S TO FOLLOW SO THAT THEY CAN JOIN A GREAT GROUP! Thanks!

Here is a link to the BananaTude Group that Erin mentioned in comment #61 above me.  It's a fun group, lots of funs posts by good bloggers.  If you can't find anything interesting to read when you sign on, it's a good place to go.

Where does someone find the time to moderate a group? I dont belong to many groups but localism gets a lot of use from me. But if I had to scrub a group I would think it would be a daily chore to keep it clean.

Brian, I'm with you...still trying to find good groups but there are so many it is overwhelming so only belong to a few. I second your motion for some housecleaning.

I am sure I have probably posted a non-relevant topic in groups but that is by accident if/when it happens since when you are getting ready to post, all that shows are the names of the groups. I don't take time to review the guidelines for each group before posting to it, and even though I read the guidelines when I joined each group, remembering that info is a different matter.

I really limit the number of groups.  I agree that some of them do not adhere to the purpose of the group.

What I've noticed is that many of the group moderators are no longer active.  Missing in action.

There does seem to be some things to work out in the groups. I recently searched for a group, knowing the name, but still can't find it. It may just take some more effort.

Thanks for the featured post Brian.

Guilty. I had started VBloggers group some time back as a moderated group. Even had to ask for help from fellow Rainers to stay on top of it. But sadly after surgery complications last fall I've not had the time to give to it., the others got too busy as well.. I would like if there were a way to put a group we've started in draft or 'hold' mode. Great topic and congrats on the feature!

I would also love to see some moderation and some house cleaning on old mgroups that no longer do anything. I was searching just the other day for a group topic and was so overhwhelmed with all of the distraction I gave up and went to google.

As I recall years ago the search function was so much better too. Now it appears to have google included and makes it hard to stay within AR.

Searching in general as well as groups would be a great thing.

Tom in #68:  Please tell me the name of the group, and I will try and find it for you.  I've been here awhile, and sometimes I know where they hide stuff... LOL.

Brian we'd love to have you join us in the BananaTude group! We are a lively bunch of professionals that work smart and hard and we know how to have fun along the journey.  I started this group on 9/9/09 and had no clue at that time where the group would go or how big and successful it would become.  My original idea was founded on building relationships and creating conversations - and that has worked well.  Our group is very active and we're more like a family to one another. I talk and email with many of them though out the week.    We have 6 moderators and we  have specific rules which are on the group page. Tudes are a respectful and honorable group......we rock!!

You make a very good point here.  Maybe if this were better monitored or if there were some software that helped to identify misplaced post, it might correct the problem and make it more fair.  I think agents are posting in other groups in order to be seen by more people.  This waters down the groups and causes the problem you describe to occur.

Terry:  Of course agents are posting in other groups in order to be seen by more people.  That makes sense, and works well.

I disagree about watering down, though.  A group in some ways is like a billboard that is advertising a product.  Just as it would make sense to use various billboards in various selected parts of town, it also makes sense to submit a post to five of the best of the various Active Rain Groups we have to choose from.

Bob: And that is sad, because Groups are a great concept.

Jennifer: That is another reason I posted this. With an influx of postings coming in over the month of March, this is a good reminder for people.

Tammy: Don't feel bad because you aren't the only one.

Rebecca: Don't we all. =)

Margaret: Some of those remain featured in the groups for a reason, but there definitely needs to be something done.

Hella: And I think that is a common misconception. Look at some of the comments in this thread and people think they get extra points for posting in groups. That is NOT TRUE. The only reason you would get more points is if people saw it and commented (you get the points for the comments).

Joetta: Agreed.

Sharon: I enjoyed meeting you as well!

Karen: Absolutely correct. And as long as you are not making the group stream look like the general stream by posting group-appropriate content, then it is all good.

Cara: Same here.

Karen: I lurk in BananaTude frequently. It is one of the good groups out there.

Michael: This is why I think many groups, especially the popular ones, should have multiple moderators.

Sharon: You should explore some of the other groups. There are some good ones out there depending on your tastes.

Diana: Thanks for the vote and thanks for trying your best to stay on topic for the groups that you post to.

Grant: Yup.

Janna: And that is a problem.

Tom: Thanks for the comment! I too have searched for the group by the exact name and have been unable to find it. That is frustrating.

Lee and Pam: Things in life can always pop up. That's why it helps to have others to help moderate. Unfortunately, life can pop up for them too.

Jerri: Yes! A decent search function would solve 95% of issues.

Karen: Thanks for offering to help Tom. Hopefully he comes back and sees your offer.

Anna: I've been to the Group but don't know that I've posted to it. I'll have to come up with some content with the appropriate Tude'ness to post there. =)

Terry: Software can't really do that job well. It would almost HAVE to be human based, which is where good moderators come in. The other option is to add a button similar to the "Report/Spam" button which would allow you to indicate that a post was in the wrong group our outside of group guidelines.

Karen: While you are correct about the billboard analogy, you wouldn't expect to see a billboard in Fort Worth says "Hows the market in New York? Find out at www.Website.com!" When I go to a video group and see a market report that doesn't contain a video, that is exactly how I feel. When I go to the Sensei group and see a listing posted, that is how I feel. There is a place for everything, but not everything can be posted in every place. I'm sure you do a great job of making sure that your posts are in the appropriate groups. I wish more people were as cognizant of this as you are.

Brian isn't it funny that you are complaining about group dysfunction and then place this one in the Grasshopper Mentor section?

Rachell in #76:  I read your comment, and then went over to the Sensei Grasshopper Mentor group to see for myself.  You are correct.  If one follows the requirements, this post does not fit.  I only looked on the first two pages of posts... but I saw at least six posts that really do not fit within the Group's stated guidelines.

The trouble with seeing them there is that it then encourages others to post things that don't fit the guidelines, either.

Good for you for posting this!  I'm sure lots of us have questions about groups!  I'm guilty as charged for making sure of which post fits which group.  I "think" I know, but you're reminder will serve well for the groups as I'll now go review their rules before I post again.

Rachell: If you read my comments, you will see that there was a reason behind doing that.

Karen: My point exactly. This happens in most groups which is one of the biggest problems with groups. If there was active moderation, these posts wouldn't be there (and neither would mine).

Lehel: Groups have a lot of potential if done right (both by the user and the moderators/AR)

Jan: We all are Jan. I admit to it myself.

There are a lot of groups. Only once have I had a post rejected from a group. I was inadvertent on my part, but I bet I have done it many times.
