WHAT exactly is a Green Home?- On healthy homes, and living - how does one define a “green” home?

Definition of a Green Built Home

A green home consists of an integrated, holistic system designed to take into serious account the wellness of the home owners, on many levels…from the aesthetic to the very practical. A special note: I am particularly fond of this type of construction for the sustainability factor- great for those who desire lifelong homes- aging in place.

A Green-built home (or green renovation) takes into account, to name just a few things-

Increased value via selected improvements

Improved energy efficiency( improved by 30 to 50 percent compared to code for heating, cooling, hot water, lights and appliances)

Thoughtful site planning and  orientation to take advantage of natural energy sources

Reduced storm-water runoff (this protects local surface-water resources)

Native vegetation (this can work to limit irrigation needs)

Enhanced indoor environments including indoor air quality (IAQ), moisture-resistant construction designed to control entry of radon and other soil gas and outdoor pollution sources.

But, to expand on this, here is a group of videos you may find of interest.   They come from Southface a nonprofit organization that addresses the need for research and education in energy policy, sustainable technologies and applied building science.

I've always thought of green homes as ones that take a little less heat and ventilation, or run off of a little solar power.

janeAnne,

Your life mission to build green is applaudable. You walk the talk and you're doing great to get the word out. I applaud you and respect what you are doing. And what's most exciting is that you're not just walking the talk locally, you're an advocate for sustainability that must change the mindset of the people throughout the world.
