Homeowners in Southwest Florida, are you looking for a low maintenance colorful flowering shrub for your garden or yard? You may consider the beautiful crown of thorns (scientific name Euphorbia milii). Native to Madagascar, they bloom almost year round.
The flowers are in clusters and have bright red bracts on the tender stems with spikes. They also have other varieties of colors - yellow or pink (as well as dwarf or larger plants which will grow to about 3 feet tall when mature.) They have been used as borders, in rock gardens or planter boxes, and as specimens. They like sun or partial shade.
It is easy to grow crown of thorns and propagation is by cuttings. They prefer dry conditions, and are salt tolerant.
