Crown of Thorns

Real Estate Agent with Kwee Huset Realty

Homeowners in Southwest Florida, are you looking for a low maintenance colorful flowering shrub for your garden or yard? You may consider the beautiful crown of thorns (scientific name Euphorbia milii). Native to Madagascar, they bloom almost year round.

The flowers are in clusters and have bright red bracts on the tender stems with spikes. They also have other varieties of colors - yellow or pink (as well as dwarf or larger plants which will grow to about 3 feet tall when mature.)  They have been used as borders, in rock gardens or planter boxes, and as specimens. They like sun or partial shade.

It is easy to grow crown of thorns and propagation is by cuttings. They prefer dry conditions, and are salt tolerant.

Kwee: The Crown of Thorns sounds very easy to keep up, and add beautiful color to any curb appeal. Thank you for suggesting them. I'll look for them next time I go to the gardening center.

Hi, Kwee...your pictures are great. I have on of these in a pot in my kitchen. I didn't know they bloomed. I'll be looking forward to that.

Hi Debbie, they flower freely most of the year, however heaviest in the winter.

Hi Kwee,

The Crown of Thorns is lovely! I think I like them even better than the Indian Hawthorne that blooms here in Texas.

I really, really like them. Thanks for introducing me to something new!

Kwee, this bush is beautiful and provides lots of color to a flower box or border!     Do they have thorns?

INteresting name for a plant. I didn't see any thorns in the pictures. A salt tolerant plant is a nice feature for your area.
