Swearing Like a Sailor... Who Me?

Swearing Like a Sailor - Mel PetersonI'm Swearing Like a Sailor.... Who Me?  I was tired, I was frustrated, I was impatient, and I just couldn't take it anymore...

Yesterday, I was preparing myself for the mental challenge of sitting down and tackling my taxes.  I have an office full of agents with a ton of expenses, so it's never quick or easy to just file and go.  There are a gazillion other things I'd rather be doing than spending my weekend sifting through receipts and paperwork.  But, I got my Mojo on and hunkered down for the task.

When I opened my new laptop, purchased last summer and only used once, I couldn't remember the sign-on password.  I tried everything.  Minutes turned into hours... then I Googled 'How to recover Windows 7 password.'  Up popped a host of sites and a very cool tutorial that was easy to follow.  I thought... hey, I can do this!

After carefully reading the narrator's steps, I downloaded a funky named code-cracking program, Ophcrack, to disc and tried to boot up... no such luck.  After several attempts, I did the F2 thingy (keep in mind... I'm a girly girl who knows nothing about techy thingies) to change the boot directory, which was successful.  Then I did the F12 thingy and whoa... the disc started downloading and up popped my user name.  I was stoked (and quietly proud), but then after one hour, still no password.  Now, I'm swearing like a friggin' sailor!

I gave up the ghost last night... and I'm back at it again today (like a dog on a bone or a woman on a mission).  I swear I can do this!  I'm trying a new program, Offline NT Password & Registry Editor, that claims to delete the Windows password all together so you can start fresh with a new password.  Lesson #1 here for those of you who have stayed with me this far... WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORDS and PUT THEM IN A SAFE PLACE so you'll remember!

I might've dropped a few bombs... Andrew, but for the most part, I'm keeping my cool ;-)

Now that's a friggin' zinger... Valerie (just had to do the word play with your last name).  You must have the patience of Job my friend!  Holy %%%!!!!

That sounds as if it could be me. We have so many passwords to remember. It is almost impossible to keep up with them. It would be great if we could only have one for everything.

I use a program called Last Pass to help me remember some of those &*)ng passwords.  Works great for me and it is free.

Mel, Been there ... done it.  Not with a missing password ... I have a bible of my passwords. I've been there with PC crashes and other issues that consumed me for days.  The good news is that we do eventually get the task done.  You will too ... a woman on a mission. I feel for you ... good luck with it.

I hear ya... Betty!  I've been trying to streamline my passwords to 2-3 so I can remember them easily, but some programs require so many variations of caps, numbers and more than 8 characters... that's when they lose me.

I'll have to check that out... Ray!  Of course, I love free!

I'm getting to the point where I'm almost done with PC's Kathleen!  My Mac friends are lol every time I whine about my PC troubles... it gets old... not to mention expensive replacing these relics!

There's nothing like a technological meltdown to make you crazed.  If swearing like a sailor is the worst you do, you're doing okay in my book.  I probably would have thrown the notebook against the wall.

I have a question.  How come you haven't used your laptop since last summer?  What on earth are you using?  And an answer.  Store your passwords online.  I use LastPass.

Mel, I tried to do that 2-3 passwords thing too, but then you get one place where you need to change it to something else, and whole thing goes to hell in a handbasket! I have a "bible" of passwords for the many sites I log in to, but I keep forgetting to update it...maybe I should go do that.

And as for swearing like a sailor - I knew you and I were kindred spirits :-D

LOL at your comment... Chris Ann.  Haven't thrown anything in awhile, although, I've certainly felt like it at times!

Great question Jane!  I have 3 laptops, and this one is the largest and too luggy to carry around.  I was going to dedicate it for use with QuickBooks and load all my financial programs for my business... but my plan was foiled this weekend.  I'm still not giving up!  So far, that's two votes for LastPass!

I have a 'Bible' of passwords too... MEA (my Kindred Spirit friend), it's getting a little ridiculous!  I need to choose no more than 2-3 total and then do some 'Bible' syncing ;-)

Mel -- the big problem comes when you have those two or three passwords, which meet the really tough password requirements many places have, and then you run into one of those companies that won't let you use the symbols or maybe even the capitals.

When you forget your log on password . . . . it's time to buy a new laptop.

Good luck and success.

Mel, I can't believe you've owned a laptop for at least six months and only used it once? That has to be a record in our business...

Passwords, and they wonder why we use the same one over and over again!

Exactly the problem... Steven!  I feel you feeling my pain ;-)

LOL... Lou!  When in doubt... buy a Mac ;-)

No, no no... Paul.  I have 3 laptops, the other 2 I use all the time as they're small and easy to carry around.  I bought this one to use exclusively for one aspect of my business, which I haven't touched since last summer... not to mention it's large and luggy (is that a word?) to carry around.

Mel,

Our office as a whole took a very serious lesson to heart on this when one of ours about a month ago had heart surgery suddenly and we had to take over her business and life for the last month and another to go.

My other half freaked and said if this had been me, she would not know where to begin with all the stuff I keep in my head so she has started keeping a spreadsheet of all my passwords and so much more we learned from just how suddenly life can bite you in the ...

Oh boy, can I relate to the multitude of passwords blues - I've got a cheat sheet somewhere, but like most people, don't always update it and assume I'm going to remember. Hahahahaha. Now that's funny.

I'd be swearing like a sailor too - I know it will be resolved soon. Just breath slowly - this too shall pass.

That could easily be me... Kevin!  I don't think anyone would even know where to look for my passwords... I keep em' locked up in a safe place... sometimes I can't remember where I left them!

Ditto Debb!  Oh... I'm breathing easier these days... I could probably use a stiff kick in the pants!  Hope you have a fab time in Alaska... let's get together when you get back!
