It is that time of year again. Spring is in the air and spring flowers are beginning to sprout. In Lake Havasu City, we have pretty purple wildflowers that can blanket some areas. If you come in contact with Scorpion Weed you could have a similar reaction as touching poison ivy or poison oak! The plant blooms between February and May and produces violet, bell shaped flowers which have 5 rounded petals. The plant gets its name from its curling flower head, which resembles a scorpion’s tail.
I remember when I moved to Havasu no one mentioned “scorpion weed.” My first experience in picking the weeds in my yard resulted in a serious rash on my hands. Needless to say, I never did that again! Scorpion weed grows rapidly and picks out of the ground easily….just use protection when dealing with these desert wildflowers…Enjoy them from a distance!
