Selling & Best Price: Add to Your Pot of Gold with Clean Closets

Don't think home buyers are looking in your closets? You'd be surprised how much clutter-free closets are worth in the sale of your home.

Consider a clean closet part of the staging of your home. Next to pricing, staging is the key factor in selling your home faster than competing listings. Closets can help sell a home, so don't overlook them when preparing for showings. On a tour, buyers plan where their stuff will go. Closets that are organized and not overflowing will appear bigger and add value.

Spring Cleanup: If you're snowbound, make hours spent indoors productive ones. If warming weather has you stirring, let the fresh air in while you work. On cleaning day, get everyone in your household involved, and play music to make it fun.

Less Is More: Put yourself in a mindset to simplify. An organized closet is a stress-free closet, and it will feel great to donate items you no longer need. Empty each closet first, then clean out dirt and dust, wipe down shelves, and repair broken fixtures. As you refill the closet, be sure to keep the floor clear.

Bedroom Closets: Walk-in closets are sought-after by buyers, but a well-organized smaller closet can also convey the ease and space the family might need. Store seasonal clothing in underbed boxes, and sort items to keep or donate. Use slim clothes hangers for best use of space, install hanging organizers with drawers/shelves, and store small items in overhead bins. Buy laundry baskets with lids to keep them neat.

Coat Closets: Entry and hall closets make day-to-day living and entertaining easy. If you're using these for overflow storage, buyers will wonder if your home has enough space for them. Use shoe organizers, scarf hangers, umbrella holders, and wall hooks, and move other items to the garage.

Closet Maintenance: After your day of spring cleaning, get in the habit of regular cleanup - about 15 minutes a week - to keep your closets in showing shape.
