WARNING: Scam Artists out in Full Force Katy and Cypress
Well it looks like Spring has arrived here in Katy Texas and so have the scam artists. Be careful as this is I believe an old scam but one that obviously works very well. Be very careful in Katy, Cypress and for that matter all of Houston. The scam involves asking for money to supposedly buy gas for their cars or trucks. It has happened to me twice this week including today.
You ask how does this scam come down? Today I was at a gas station which is part of Kroger located at West Road and Jones Road. I had no sooner got all my data entered into their system when I saw out of the corner of my eye a person approaching me. I turn to find a young woman moving in direction. She says to me sir can you please help as I need gas for car and I have run out of money. My big city upbringing danger alert signals were going off full blast. I said to her No thank you and go away. She stopped, sighed loudly and walked back to her car. I forgot to mention she appeared to be pregnant!
Typically the scam comes down with a male companion hiding somewhere close to the area where the begging request is made. The basic concept is get the victim distracted and reaching for their wallet. Once this happens the male accomplice comes up from behind carrying a weapon and steals the wallet, your car, or whatever and maybe makes you get back into your car and drive somewhere else to finish the job with a bad ending for the victim.
After being approached, I was surveying the entire area which includes a large parking lot that services the strip center and the Kroger store. I did not see anyone out of place at first. As I watched the gas flow something caught my eye that was flashing as it was a police car in the middle of West Road blocking all traffic. A policeman was in the process of cuffing a young man and there appeared to be an normally dressed undercover cop who was holding tightly on to the suspect. Hmmm I wondered if this guy was the accomplice for women asking about gas money.
The young women was still in her car when I left and was on her cell phone. She was driving a late model Jeep. The police moved the suspect to a place out of the street and appeared to be actively questioning the now handcuffed suspect. The discussion appeared to rather heated
Until this happened I had forgotten that back on Tuesday morning a woman driving a white pick up yelled to me when I was getting into my office building. I thought at first she wanted directions as this does happen all the time. The addresses and building can be very confusing in this whole Katy and Cypress areas She said she was embarrassed but could I help her with gas money? I said no and walked into our building very quickly and hopped onto an elevator watching for anyone who looked out of place.
The scammers use women to ask for gas money which these days is very plausible with the high price of fuel. The accomplice hides until the off guard victim gets totally distracted with the scam. Watch out and be careful. Men are much more likely to fall for this nonsense than women!.
