What’s the 60-30-10 Rule? (Part 2)

Question: What’s the 60-30-10 Rule?

Answer #2:

Yesterday, I posted Answer #1 here http://activerain.com/blogsview/3653948/what-s-the-60-30-10-rule- . Thank you for your comments.

Answer #2 is from one of my very wise mentors (who also happens to live in Pennsylvania, although does not know my cousin).

This time the 60-30-10 rule pertains to what you do with the remaining 10% of furnishings and home decor you kept. Keep this rule in mind when considering your room's color palette.

60% the unifying color, 30% the visual interest, 10% the punch

How do you know which things make up the 60, 30 or 10?

Think of a dapper suit.

His classic gray suit is 60 %, the crisp, patterned shirt 30%, and orchid tie is the 10% punch that brings it altogether.

Its really all about balance. Just keep in mind your accent colors should only be the pop. Too much of a good thing, can make for a busy thing.

Kim, I thought that this was going to be something like the 80/20 rule.  Now that I have read this, I am going to have to look up your previous post and read it too!  Just from this one post, it is clear that you know your stuff!

Wow Kim, that is so cool-I've never broken it down that way but it's a great way to think about color and pattern choices - I'm going to use this analogy with my clients, so thank you!

Thank you, Dorie. I appreciate Kathy's feature - she's an awesome AR Ambassador!

Hi Joanna, I agree, this was taught to me as well and it helps to visualize the difference.

Ha, Gary.  My cousin came up with answer #1, and he relates better to that application as well, either works!

Thanks for coming by, Kristin.

This rule applies to so much more than I originally thought.  Kim, if there's a Part 3 please allow time for me to catch up.  Credit to the Pennsylvanians (my home State) where America started!

Your rule is making me think today and how to take the remaining 10% and make it work in 100%. I hope part 3 has something to do with managing clutter. De-cluttering is the number one thing a home seller can do to make their home more appealing to buyers. Thanks for your post today,
