Are the Content and Pictures in Your Blog YOURS??

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

When I started blogging in 2007, I wanted my blogs to POP.I wanted pictures to accompany the stories and a few times used cartoon pictures that I got off the internet.

I went back through my old posts (back in 2007) to make sure I didn't have any pictures inserted in them ....that WERE NOT mine. I had a few. I deleted them quickly as I was learning about NOT using animations, pictures, cartoons that were not mine. Obviously, it was “stealing” and I did not get permission to use them.

I always write my own content so I never had to worry about that. HOWEVER, I have noticed that there are a few people that blatantly copy and paste other peoples blogs, articles and pictures into their blogs and answer to the comments like they had written it!

Just as I do in my Real Estate business, I do everything by the book and advertising (including blogging) also has to be within our state laws for the Real Estate Industry. There are no cutting corners in how we advertise ourselves and if you are ‘STEALING’ other peoples content or pictures you will not only jeopardize your license, but you areputting yourself at risk of getting charged for plagiarism and copyright infringement.

Blogging is fun and can be very rewarding if done correctly. We follow all the guidelines and rules not only on ActiveRain, but through all our internet marketing. We carry ourselves in high esteem to give information to the public and our peers.

When the public catches on you are copying another's work

Do you REALLY think they are going to call you?

We have to use our OWN written words and pictures. If you steal other people’s content or pictures reconsider your reasons for blogging. There is no such thing as “borrowing” and there is no justifying TAKING other people’s work because you are lazy to do it yourself.

A couple of our long time members on ActiveRain wrote these a few years back but they are still good examples of blogs about Plagiarism (STEALING):

Bottom line.... No one should be taking and downloading anything from anyone's blog or sites! IT IS STEALING! If they give you permission….GET IT IN WRITING JUST AS YOU DO IN REAL ESTATE! If it isn’t in writing and signed then you don’t have a contract!! And if you do have written permission then make sure you acknowledge it. TO BE SAFE>>>JUST DO YOUR OWN WORK!

So....if you have arguments about why it's okay to use other people's content, pictures, animations, cartoons and maps, let’s hear it. But first, READ ABOUT COPYRIGHT STRAIGHT FROM http://www.copyright.gov

No Excuses.

If you did not take that picture and you did not write that content

......then it is NOT yours to put in your blog.

PLAGIARISM.COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.

Tammie: I read a few blogs years gone past how some of these places you have to read the fine print.  Some say that you can use it but not in advertising yourself...which blogging is.

Sharon:  I had a LOAN OFFICER here take my photo from a listing and use it in his blog. I spoke to both him and his boss and they took it down. Another one who believed that it was ok because it was on my listing????  WOW.

Paula:  Yeah...it's tedious work but I needed to do this for my own piece of mind. I used some from a program I bought (which is no longer available)  and it said in the disclaimer that we could use all pics (BUT NOT REAL ONES OF PEOPLE) for anything and everything.  This is what I used after I did the walk through of my blogs years ago.

Sally,

If it's on my blog, or on my website, I either took the picture, or purchased the rights to use it. Lately, I've gotten away from purchasing the rights, and only using pictures and graphics that I create.

Excellent post on a hot topic. Thank you for the information. You would think plagerisim would be a thing of the past with the internet making it so easy to track down. I think your photos look great!

Hi Sally,  You are so preaching to the choir here.  The problem is: you are preaching to the faithful, i.e., those who would not consider using content noth there own.  The group your well written post is aimed at will not be reading your post.  Or, if they happen to read it by mistake will ignor your admonition !

Bill: I can only hope that those who are stealing (being lazy and taking others pics/writing), cheating (taking points for not really doing anything but copying and pasting) and lying (acting like they're the person who really wrote it) will actually get it through their head that they can risk losing their license, status as a seasoned professional and even charged and taken to court let alone their reputation...which is what we rely on to succeed in business.

WOW that is sick sad and wrong in so many ways. If you need pics in your posts you can get them for free as long as you disclose them properly from freedigitalphotos.

Good post

Great information considering where to find photos - go to the AR menu of where to find photos.  Never borrow someone else's!

Duplicate content is not going to do any good for anyone, especially from an SEO standpoint. Copypasta is not the answer to anything.

As for photos, I'm positive most people steal photos for almost every blog post they do. I personally go out and take pictures and those are the only pictures I use on my website. :)

Good post and some great things to think about.

Sally, some of us choose to do the right thing while others do not. When I see agents stealing on blogs, I wonder if maybe they're cheating in other avenues in life as well.

Sally, it is a sad thing that we KEEP finding the need to talk about this. Just write it yourself, take the photos yourself OR pay for them.

Sometimes I have guest posters, which works out well all the way around. That would be on my other site, not here. On Activerain you can just reblog, if the button is there.

I have found this over and over again. What a risk they are taking.

Very timely advice for members of the ActiveRain network. All of us should be using our own materials in blogs.

Hi Sally, It is nice that you referenced all our old friends. It brings back memories of Lenn railing against those who were "stealing" her maps. I couldn't agree with you more. I generally don't use any graphics anymore, but I purchased a large library of clip art for when  really need something.

Sally-Good information for new and experienced bloggers. Professional writers, who should know better, get caught in plagarizing every year.  Easy enough to avoid, if one follows your principals.

It depends on what you know. As you said, when you started you used public images( like myself)

My understanding: the moment you posted on FB, Google, Pinterest, etc.~ it is public. If the Google/Yahoo/Pinterest/etc. would not pull( steal) all those pictures from all places and post publicly, we'd not have these discussion.

The current thinking is that if someone posts something publicly, they give up all reasonable expectations of not having their pictures re-posted as long as those pictures are not sold for profit.

If following best practices it is better to give a credit where credit is due if you can. But it is not always possible since the picture goes through many 'hands'.
