I got a call from a nice customer in Stamford CT and he wants to refinish his hardwood floors. After speaking to him, I asked him if he remembered what he typed into google...and he had it up on the screen. He typed in "resale value of refinishing hardwood floors." And, of course, up came one of my posts entitled "What types of flooring provide the best ROI if you are selling your home.
There are 3 things interesting to me here.
First, while I was on page 1, I was not #1, nor even in the top 3. On his screen I was #5 (which is still good). But, why did he click on me???? He said he clicked on me because it had my picture next to it. This really reinforces the need for google authorship...and if you're still not sure how to do, check out Craig Daniel's post on "Does google count you as an established author?"
Second, this really shows the importance of synonyms and how smart google is. Not once did I mention "resale" in my post, not even in the alt tags or in the background meta tags or anything (although I think I may add it now...we always continue to learn, right?). I do have value in there, and I do discuss selling your home, and google made the connection.
Third, I think my title also helps the click throughs, and I can see it is coming up correctly - the way I intended it (partially because of the work I had done using the Yoast plug in).
The final interesting thing is that he knows someone who recommended us. He can't remember who it is, but one of our past customers recommended us. I'm not sure if he recognized me/the site or just the idea of "The flooring Girl." He can't remember who it was as it was several months ago...and now he is finally ready. I'll find out more info when I meet w/ him next week.
So, if you haven't already, get your Google Plus account set up and set up your google authorship. If you're not sure how, refer to Craig's post above. (please note that I'm not an expert on how to do this. I set mine up last June and things were set up differently then...and I will admit that it took me several tries. But, I was determined, and it definitely has paid off).
