CHATHAM-KENT'S WINGS OF SPRING THIS WEEKEND

                           MARCH 16-17/2013 RONDEAU PARK

Spring is in the air. As I look out my window and the snow is coming down I really wonder. Mother Nature just has not quite made up her mind. This always happens at this time of year and we go from a day like Saturday when our temperature reaches 65 degrees to a day like today. It is very cold expecially for those of us like myself who love the warm weather. With the strong winds,it feel even colder than it is! But regardless of the flip flop, our calender tells us Spring will be here soon and with it the birds arriving in our area on their way to their Spring Migration to points north.

Birdwatching is a popular activity especially in Spring and Fall at Ontario Parks. This weekend in Chatham-Kent March 16-17 the Rondeau Bay Waterfowlers Association and the Friends of Rondeau will stage the annual Wings of Spring Event. In March each year, thousand of waterfoul stop at Rondeau Provincial Park to rest and feed on their way north. This event gives Birdwatching Enthusiasts an opportunity to see the Tundra Swans Tundra Swanas well as tons of other species. There are actiovites planned for all ages, a BBQ, Sighting locations along the Bay and even a Live Bird Prey show. The first 25 cars are compliments of the Waterfowl Association and all events except the BBQ are free with a Day Pass. Check for details on the Ontario Parks Website Rondeau Provincial Park is located South East of Chatham in Chatham-Kent and has Dunes, Marshland and one of the largest Carolinian Forests in Canada. It is a favorite location for cottagers and day trips to Swim, Boat, Hike, Bird Watch ro just spend a leisurely day having a picnic with the family. You can even camp.

Another popular Birdwatching event takes place in May every year at Rondeau. It is the 'Festival of Flight' and is held May 4-23/2013. More than 350 species have been sighted like Scissor Tailed Flycatchers and Harris’s Sparrow. Last year, Blue Grosbeaks and a few Prothonotary Warblers were seen and theses species are very rare in Ontario. For more details on this and other events visit the Ontario Parks website.
