Save on Air Fare by Buying an Extra Ticket
By buying an extra ticket to get to Europe, Asia, Hawaii and many other far away and some not so far away destinations, you could save hundreds of dollars per ticket.
You can take advantage of city-specific specials and international ticket specials, but not if you purchase one ticket for the whole trip. Some examples:
As Air Berlin begins flying out of Chicago in March, it is offering cheap prices to German cities. Low-priced flights to Chicago are common, so buying a ticket to Chicago, then buying a ticket to Germany results in a big saving.
A Dallas to Dusseldorf round trip ticket costs about $1,337 when priced as one ticket. Buying a $243 Dallas-Chicago round trip, plus a $677 round-trip on United Airlines costs $677. You would save $417 per ticket.
The trade-off is that you would have to check your bags twice or might have to stay overnight in a connecting city. Smart mileage-savvy travelers have been using this technique for many years.
