What is a Snow Fence?
I am from College Station, Texas. It rarely snows in College Station so snow fences were not part of my vocabulary. I’ve discovered there are a lot people from Texas that are moving to Colorado. I've also discovered that there are a lot of snow fences in Colorado.

Snow fences are used to control blowing snow and to prevent snow drifts from forming on roads or in parking lots.
Research has shown that the snow fences reduce the number of automobile accidents and that it costs less to install and maintain snow fences than it costs to remove the snow from the roads.
This picture shows how the snow accumulated along the snow fences. It was taken in Douglas County on Highway 83 between Colorado Springs and Parker.

Most of the snow fences that I have seen along highways look like wooden picket fences that are set in the pasture maybe 15 or 20 feet from the fence that is running along the road.
When the blowing wind hits the fence, the wind slows down and drops the snow it was carrying. As result, the snow piles up at the snow fence rather than accumulating on the road.
Another benefit of snow fences is that the accumulated snow melts in the pasture rather than the moisture being wasted on the road or in the ditch.
For more information on different types of snow fences see the Iowa DOT's Snow Fence Booklet.
