CherryBlosTreesAt the end of this month, the Cherry Blossom Festival will be held in DC, when the trees should be coming into full bloom and the Tysons Corner area will be filled with tourists seeing the sights. The festival is a huge event in celebration of the special trees that were a gift from Japan over 100 years ago; so every year around the last two weeks of the month of March, it’s all about the cherry blossoms.

There is a horticultural wonder right here in the Tysons Cornerarea. The Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna offers a 95-acre campus filled with gardens that include more than 20 varieties of cherry trees. The park also has walking trails, lakes, extensive shade gardens, beautiful gazebos, and a variety of birds, butterflies, and seasonal beauty. Even in the winter they hold a festival of lights. Educational programs about conservation and plant diversity are held at the visitor center. The Atrium houses an amazing indoor tropical garden which is also used for meetings, receptions, workshops, and is popular for weddings. The picnic area is open to visitors, and there are beautiful displays by the restored 18th century cabin. The Korean American Cultural Committee (KACC) funds the Korean Bell Garden, a peaceful retreat with stone terracing, stairs, meandering path, reflection stations, various Korean trees, and the Bell Pavilion and Bell.

For the remainder of this month and all during April, the flowering cherries, PotomacValley native wildflowers, magnolias, minor bulbs, tulips, daffodils, conifers collection, lenten rose, and rock gardens are featured. Why settle just for the cherry trees when Meadowlark has so much more to offer? If you are already a resident, you should consider a tour or field trip or make a point to attend a concert or participate in a volunteer program.

Camp Grow is another wonderful program just for the kids. The curriculum combines games with nature activities such as field trips, hikes, and vegetable gardening. Other activities such as yoga, painting, music, and storytelling (just to name a few) take advantage of the beauty of the gardens.
