Even Your Grandma Can Play in Steamboat Springs, CO

Steamboat Springs, Colorado does have nice activities for the elderly. My friend was wondering what her 84 year old mother would do if she spent part of the year with her here in Steamboat Springs. I mean, it can be really scary. You love your parents but they can’t exactly play with you anymore….and they don’t like mountain biking as much as you….and they don’t like jumping off that boulder on their new fat boards on a 10-inch powder day….and, well, they just don’t have the energy they used to have. Funny how that works.

So I suggested a little internet research. Because, let’s face it, the big plan, I mean the BIG PLAN is your parents are always older than you. That’s just how it works. So after a brief look on the internet, here is what I found:

We have the Routt County Council on Aging. They are quite the busy bunch. Since all I care about is the fun stuff, I will highlight that:

  • Senior Eat and Greet. Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays, and Fridays $3.00 donation. Reservations two days in advance.  (970) 879-0633
  • The Monday Speaker Series
  • Private showings of the Tread of Pioneer Museum and the Steamboat Art Museum.
  • And some odd events like the Community Spelling Bee

Steamboat’s Over the Hill Gang, founded in 1985, has over 400 members who love the active lifestyle. They offer:

  • Free guided skiing in conjunction with the Steamboat Ski Area.  Every day but Saturday.
  • Group Snowshoeing every Saturday Morning
  • Regular dinners and happy hours
  • Bridge
  • Tuesday Happy Hour at the Ptarmigan Inn
  • Mah-Jongg lessons
  • Special Interest Bulletin Board (you should check this one out-it’s great)
  • And All, I mean All outdoor activities-the list is too long

Then there is the Bud Werner Memorial Library which provides numerous free community events which include:

  •  Book groups
  •  Movies
  •  Yoga
  •  Dance
  •  Speakers
  •  etc., etc., etc.

“Free” and “community” being the operative words here.

Just give your parent a pair of Yaktrax and  some ski poles (in the winter), and the free bus schedule (year round) and everything will be fine! (well, they might stay too long…..maybe not fine)

Steamboat Springs is great for all ages and is a family friendly place. Let me show you.

Enjoy your family,

I love Steamboat.  And, let's be honest....If Grandma can find things to do, then everyone should like it!!!!!

Great tag line! I agree with Larry, if Grandma can do something, everyone should be happy.
