A Real Estate Agent's Car - Yep, I'm Prepared For Anything!

By
Industry Observer

It seems like a real estate agent's car tends to serve double duty, and be our storage for most anything and everything we might need during the day. I recently cleaned out mine (WAY overdue for this spring cleaning) and laughed out loud at the collection I found:

Practical comfort items: Kleenex, 2 umbrellas, 3 separate containers of bandaids & wet wipes, a small stack of napkins, 2 pair of gloves, several dollars of loose change, sun screen for the windshield (which to date I've used.....never), 2 ice scrapers, a dozen favorite CD's, granola bars, a few half empty water bottles...

What's in an agent's car?

Real estate agent "necessities": arrow signs, envelope full of nuts & screws, 3 mini flashlights, 1 pair disposable " booties". ( wish I'd remembered I had those when I was showing the last "too filthy to walk on the carpet" REO listing), a couple of lockboxes, key to the bike chain sometimes needed to secure lockboxes, STACKS of business cards (including an older version I don't even use), 8 little notebooks for making random notes (wait, that's what my iPad's for!), at least a dozen pens & 1 tiny pencil (of course only 4 of the pens still work), a Roadrunner map book plus state, local & Seattle maps (yep, again that's what my iPad's for....), 3 tape measures, a small toolkit, a laser measuring gizmo...

Puzzling miscellany: a random key (no idea what it unlocks), an aged lollipop, several expired fast food coupons, several random Starbucks receipts, 2 beach buckets ( well you never know when I'll need those to play at the beach with the grandkids), the little sticker showing the due date for my next oil change 'cause it keeps falling off the windshield...

So, what's in your car????

I have dedicated one afternoon a week to cleaning out my car. I, too, am amazed at what has accumulated in my car in the seven days it has been use. For the record, if you carry anyone's chils in your car, check for dropped fudgsicles IMMEDIATELY after they exit the vehicle!!!

Ha!  That's too funny!  I've got a lot of the same items in my car.  You have to be prepared!

Nancy, this is a great post.  I'm scared every time I clean out my car!  When I first got my license I told the kids a little white lie, that I took an oath to keep the car clean.   The problem was that every time the kids got in the car, they'd say: "I thought you took an oath!"

Hi Nancy, sometimes we can find treasures we had long forgotten about. Last time I cleaned out my car I forgot to put the necessities back in and spent half an hour looking for a flashlight at my next showing! Currently, I have a tricycle in my trunk .. you never know when you could use an alternate mode of transportation ;-)

Christine - it's a good thing the sun is shining and we are predicted to have spring temps this weekend or I might be really ticked at your reminder about not needing an ice scraper!!  LOL  Thankfully we really don't need them very often here either (or more for ice than snow....)

Oh Quinton - love your caution about checking for fudgesicles!!  Somehow that sounds like the voice of experience - I'm thinking very, very sticky experience!

LOL - I think being prepared comes natural to us real estate agents, Christiansens!  (Or at least it does after finding we need something RIGHT NOW and not having it with us!)

Wayne & Jean Marie - aren't kids amazing at never forgetting things like that - though they are pros at forgetting many of the other things parents say!!

I seem to have a lot of winter items, which is odd because there is no way I'm driving in the snow, but I have a fold-up snow shovel, two wool blankets and snow boots. I also found zip-ties all over the place and a Wells Fargo mini-tool kit! If we get a sudden snow storm where I have to put up a sign, I guess I'm ready!

Hi Francine!  And hurray - now I know who to call next time we have a sudden snow storm and I'm stranded in my driveway!  I have one of those mini tool kits too and they do come in handy for sure - I can remember past adventures with signs when I was searching my car for anything to reconnect the sign to stake where a screw had disappeared or anything heavy enough to clunk the top of the stake to try to drive it into rocky land.... sigh.  Maybe I do still need MORE in my trunk!  LOL

Cute post Nancy - love it. My real estate car had a couple of mice living in it recently. OMG - not a good idea. They somehow scurried in from the cold and tried to set up camp - my husband managed to get them out and I'm hoping they stay in the wetland area and away from the car!

I have a phone charger with a USB port, a laser measuring device, a regular measuring tape, some real estate CDs to listen to, some rugs and towels, business cards, pens, and a pair of flat shoes. Wow, it adds up, doesn't it?
