Key To UnderstandingWith your clients and also in your personal life of interacting with other people a question to ask yourself

Do You Know What The Key To Understanding A Person Is?

This was reinforced to me when a client complimented me on being a good listener to them.

LISTENING is the key.

You improve your listening by being an active listener being quiet more than talking and HEARING each part of  a person's story, like unlocking each tumbler in a door lock.

Work INTENSELY at getting all the pieces of a person's story to GRASP WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT. Observe the non verbals as well as listening to the VERBAL. THEN you will achieve maximum understanding. AND THEY WILL NOTICE!!

Gary, thanks for this great posting.  Listening is always the KEY!!  So often, we tend to "think" we know what the other person wants to hear, without really understanding what their true needs are.  The simple rule I try to live by, "treat others as they would LIKE TO BE TREATED".  You can only do that, but truly listening to them and what makes them tick!!

Yes listening is critically important.  It requires us to focus on the other person.

yes it is a key and a very important one as well. but listening alone will not get you to the big game, action based on listening is important too

You can always spot a good communicator - they are the quiet one. People who are constantly trying to interrupt and tell their own story drive me bonkers. Listening is such an art - I LOVE the graphic. It's the perfect illustration. Happy Easter to you Gary - hope you have a wonderful holiday.
