Isle of Palms & 917 Ocean Boulevard

917 Ocean Boulevard, Isle of PalmsIsle of Palms is one of the richest areas when it comes to our nation’s history.  The Seewee Indians were one of the first natives to meet English settlers and it was said that they greeted them by swimming up to the ships carrying the travelers to shore.  Legend also has it that the only other inhabitants of this area, before the English arrived, were pirates who buried their treasures for safekeeping in the deserted dunes and woods.

During the Revolutionary War, a British Army contingent of 2,500 men attempted to raid a colonial encampment on adjacent Sullivans Island.  Many men drowned and the attack failed when the force attempted to cross the treacherous waters of Breach Inlet between the two islands. The area regained attention during the Civil War, as a point of departure for many ships. Of the many ships deployed and docked in this area, the most important was the CSS Hunley.  The Hunley was lost at sea, until it was recently discovered offshore of Sullivans Island.  It was recovered and is now being preserved for later generations.

Living room at 917 Ocean Boulevard, Isle of PalmsWith all of this attention, the island itself still remained mostly without residents until the early 19th century.  The residents of the early 19th century found that the Isle of Palms was a great escape from the hot summer heat and fast paced tempo of Charleston. Currently, with our advancements in technology and transportation, this ideological feeling still holds true. Residents of all over South Carolina and visitors from all over the world come to the Isle of Palms for a rare and peaceful retreat.  Visitors enjoy the comfortable and quiet environment which provides a sanctuary from their busy outside world. The town itself is small with a few fantastic restaurants, shops and parks for the entire family to enjoy and it is able to be accessed easily by foot or bike. The Isle of Palms beach is considered the nicest out of the few surrounding areas and is continuously maintained for a pleasant beach-going experience.  It is also easily accessible by foot from nearly anywhere on the island.
