What do anesthesia, Alaska and Florida have in common? All three share an important anniversary today, March 30.

While these interesting items are intriguing, they have nothing to do with my real estate business, helping people like you buy and sell homes in Silicon Valley, Calif. and beyond. I admit, they just add fun and fascination to life.
Here are today’s 10 strange but true events that happen to have their anniversary on today’s date, March 30, 2013. I hope you find them interesting, too.
10 Strange but True Events That Occurred on March 30
1822 – The Florida Territory is created in the United States.
1842 – Ether anesthesia is used for the first time, in an operation by the American surgeon Dr. Crawford Long. (I’ll bet that patient was grateful-prior to ether they often used nothing.)
1867 – Alaska is purchased from Russia for $7.2 million, about 2 cent/acre ($4.19/km²), by United States Secretary of StateWilliam H. Seward. (I would have loved to get in on that land deal!)
1870 – Texas is readmitted to the Union following Reconstruction.
1909 – The Queensboro Bridge opens, linking Manhattan and Queens.
1939 – The Heinkel He 100 fighter sets a world airspeed record of 463 mph (745km/h).
1954 – The Yonge Street subway line opens in Toronto. It is the first subway in Canada.
1976 – The first Land Day protests are held in Israel/Palestine.
1981 – President Ronald Reagan is shot in the chest outside a Washington, D.C., hotel by John Hinckley, Jr. Another 2 people were wounded at the same time.
