Something Different to Try...

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with JenRan Realty, LLC

I've been told to give a presentation at my husband's home building seminar(s).  At first I thought it would be a one-time deal, but I think I'll be doing at least three this year.   Free Homebuilding Seminars

To be honest I haven't done any formal public speaking since high school.  I remember what to do/not to do and also remember vividly how terrified I was to stand in front of the class.  Do I want to subject myself to this?  Yes I do.  Part of being a real estate agent is giving presentations to people so this will be similar except the audience will be larger and without any pressure to get a client.

After thinking about it I realized I have lots to talk about, probably too much, and won't have any trouble filling up my time slot.  There is so much to cover when buying land; the contracts, location, amenities, road frontage, ledge, topography, easements, right of ways, septic/sewer, water, views, pricing, perc testing, and finding the right REALTOR® of course.

I don't have a whole lot of time to prepare my presentation but I am eager to try something different to get my name out there.  With luck everything will go well and there won't be any butterflies!  Heck, it might be turn out to be a lot of fun.

I absolutely hate to doing any public speaking.  I get by following a plan of topics and looking around the room at the attendees but not concentrating on any one in-particular.  Telling a joke helps to lighten the mood.  Good luck.

Renee, it used to terrify me but I think (at least I hope) I've outgrown my fears.  Luckily my husband will be there and it will be a small group of 30-40 people.

I just don't know how to get past this.  I am great with a small group or one on one but put me in a room full of people and I am a deer in Headlights.  I "um" alot.....it kills me!!!  Any suggestions??? I must bore people to death.  Thank goodness I keep it real short.  I'm a broker and have a small office. I know I have to get over this.

Maureen, the best way to avoid the 'ums' is to record your speech and listen to it (or have someone point out all the mistakes-that's apparently what my husband is for, LOL).  You'll learn if you speak too fast or too low and if you 'um'.  I'm sure some of my old public speaking fear will come back.  I've had some practice talking to strangers at home shows, fairs, and trade shows.  If someone had told me years ago that I'd be speaking with the public in this manner I never would have believed it!

Hi Jennifer,

I am doing New HomeBuyer Seminars, I would love to hear what you are doing that is working. Is your husband a builder? How does he get potential students to the seminar? I will be charging for my classes, running over 3 nights.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Hi Dawn,my husband is a builder in CT and RI.  His seminars are free but it is tough to get people to sign up.  He uses print ads, radio ads, flyers, localism posts, and has the registration form on his website(s).  He covers topics like finding land (this is my part), financing, building options etc.
