Wash that dirty mouth out with soap!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Wash that mouth out with soap! The other morning when I was in a state of what I would call “less than alert” I reached for a bottle of what I thought was mouthwash and took a swig.

In a fraction of a second I realized the minty taste that I was expecting was actually an intense chemical detergent and I reacted as anyone would.

I instantly realized that I had grabbed the bottle of hand soap instead of the mouthwash!

After about ten minutes of rinsing to get the bad taste out of my mouth and convincing myself that I was not going to die from “soap poisoning” I started thinking back to the days of my youth.

Back in the 50’s, we always lived under the threat of having our mouths washed out with soap if we said a bad word.

But I have to admit that I avoided the punishment and so I had no experience to draw upon as an adult. As a result, my language has become a little colored.

Now that I have actual knowledge of the ramifications of a soapy mouth, I have to admit that I would clean up my speech before I would ever endure such a consequence again!

And so I’m going to work hard to clean up my vocabulary!

Because that soap tasted REALLY bad!

Ick, gross!  As soon as I read what happened to you, I could taste the bar of soap that was put in my mouth as a kid - unfortunately, I didn't escape that consequence....  but it only happened once.  I learned really fast!

Brings back memories.  But an ugly mouth can leave a bad taste in a buyer's and seller's mouth.

Thanks for the laugh this morning.  I still use the threat on my grandchildren. So far only one has actually come very close to having the threat carried out. :-)

Looks like you need to buy some soap that isn't the same minty color as your mouthwash. Have you ever brushed your teeth with Iceyhot?

I love coffee & real estate. I am out of coffee!

Not proud to admit it, but a slip up happened with a little one in my house and I laughed out loud. Soap was the last thing on my mind. Should I also be ashamed at the enjoyment I got from reading about your accident!? Warped...

I remember one personal mouth washing when I was little. Too young to understand the meaning of the figurative phrase - to cleanse my speech with soap. Just knew - once was enuff!

Richard, it sounds like a horrible way to start the day! My brother, who was also named Richard got his mouth washed out with soap when we were little ...just being a witness was enough to make me not want to go there.....a lesson,I had forgotten until today :-}

Richard ~ That is awful! What a way to start the day. I do remember the threat of having my mouth washed out with soap, thankfully, I averted the experience. Personally, I miss the days when spoken words weren't so foul. Hum, how much soap would it take to clean up language in today's society? Have a great day!

I once put tooth paste in my hair - thinking it was Berl Cream (Yes that was many years ago) and on a backpacking trip a friend of mine confused two bottles and fried a fish in soap rather than oil.

Cute story. Were you still asleep when you grabbed the hand soap or multitasking that caused this incident?

Nonetheless, some "salty" language judiciously used can be very effective on occasion!

Richard - I think you'd better choose a different color or a different sized bottle for either your mouthwash or your soap!

That is one punishment I was never threatened with.  I think my mother was afraid she would poison me if she washed my mouth out with soap.  Got a few slaps across the face though, I was careful after that.  Now as to the potty mouth, I have to be very careful with that too.  Growing up in a place where curse words were the norm it becomes pretty ingrained in your vocabulary.  The "f" word was just another word.  That doesn't fly in RE and I do tend to slip especially when I'm excited or upset.  Tough habit to break for sure but I'm working on it.  I'll probably be dead before I actually attain success, but at least I try.  :-)
