Relay for Life Coming to Vienna!

relayIt’s that time again. Time to get out your walking or running shoes and hit the road. Of course, if you are a runner or avid walker, you never put those shoes away. Time to put in some serious training time because the American Cancer Society will be coming to the Town Green in Vienna in June to hold their Relay for Life in in Vienna! The Tysons Cornerarea has been looking forward to this event since last year when we first heard that it might come to our area. People will gather by the thousands from all over Northern Virginia and beyond to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

To help the American Cancer Society, in May of 1985 in Tacoma, Washington, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track raising $27,000 for the cause. As a result, a year later, 340 supporters joined in and, as they say, the rest is history. Now the Tysons Corner area is taking part.

The event is an overnight community walk starting on the 1st and ending on the 2nd of June. People camp around the track and members of each team take turns walking around the track. It isn’t so much a sporting event as it is an awareness event with food, games, and activities that provide entertainment in a family-friendly atmosphere. There are ceremonies that prove to be very meaningful and moving such as the Survivors Lap, in which all the cancer survivors take the first lap around the track in celebration of their victory over cancer. The Luminaria Ceremony is held after dark to honor the people who are fighting or have fought cancer. The Fight Back Ceremony is symbolic to inspire participants to make the commitment to take action against cancer every day. Being that it is a team event, participants are not required to remain the entire time, so if you’re crunched for time or just visiting Tysons Corner, come anyway and participate in whatever way you can.

June may seem far away, but now is the time to start making plans; sign up, start a team and participate. Even if you can't walk in the event, you can participate in other very meaningful ways in addition to making donations, such as personalizing a luminaria with memories of a loved one effected by cancer to light the way around the track.

I hope you have a great  turn out. I ran my first 100 miler in 1971, also for charity.

I am reduced to walking now, due to a few injuries, but I still like to get out for a workout, such as it is.

Have a great day and event.

Bryan
