citizens_life_4Power of Attorney Abuse of Seniors is much more common than known by the general public and what the popular media reports on.

Just because Power of Attorney Abuse of Seniors is not very flashy, and often remains unreported to the police (due to embarrassment by family or other loved ones) this form of abuse and crime is often ignored and overlooked by the media and remains hidden from the general public.

Any form of abuse to any person, including seniors is unforgivable off-course, however Power of Attorney Abuse is often conducted by those nearest and supposedly dearest to the abused, and as such the abuse becomes so personal, cruel and hurtful to the abused and everybody affected directly and indirectly.iStock_000002612446XSmall

A few years ago I was assisting an elderly lady and client with her plans to make some real estate decisions.

During this time we became intimately aware how vulnerable people can become to abusers and we were forced to report a suspected abuser to the police and request the assistance of the clients Lawyer and the office of the public Trustee.

From the information we later received, this dear past client was literally one signature away of no longer having control of all of her financial affairs including her property.

The Abuse was prevented in this case, however how many go undetected until it is too late Senior woman using computerAll this due to the fast control and powers granted in “template powers of attorney” that one can download for free and sign on a moments notice…….

The articles we share with you today offers simple yet very effective steps to prevent potential abuse, as well as ways to correct potential issues if you are suspecting that you or a loved one might be in danger of power of attorney abuse.

Today we have included links to a series of 4 very powerful and well written articles by Risha Gotlieb, a Toronto Based Journalist on the topic of Power of Attorneys, Senior Abuse and the steps to avoid Abuse from Power of Attorney’s.

We thank Risha Gotlieb, and Rhonda Latreille of CPCA for allowing us to share these very important and informative articles with our readers. CPCA_Logo

HI Valerie,

Nice to hear from you.

Thank you for your feedback and interest. In the experience we shared it was not a family member, but often times it is.
