Realtors: What If Being An Agent Was A Salaried Position?

By
Real Estate Agent with Exit Realty Enterprises

puzzledThere are many reasons we all became agents, but I had a thought I wanted to share, and I'd like your thoughts.

If being a real estate agent were a salaried position, in other words - no commission, (1) would you still be a full-time agent?... (2) what would be an acceptable salary for you to do this job?... and (3) what parameters would need to be in place for you to accept it as a salaried position?

For myself, I honestly don't know, but I'm curious what others think about it.

Max, it's an interesting question and although there are many different reasons why we all got in the business one thing that we all have in common is that we are entrepreneurs.  We do this because it gives us the freedom of calling our own shots.  This can be a downfall for many but I do think it's the common reason.  A salary would be nice in this market but let's face it, we need to design our business models so that we are consistently closing and you are consistently paying yourself a wage.  The rest of the commissions are to be applied to taxes, support staff, marketing, etc....

Mario - I think you make an excellent point.  I agree that many of us have the entrepreneurial spirit that we apply to this role.  I guess I find this intriguing because there are other sales fields (pharmaceutical, financial, insurance, etc) that are structured to provide salaries plus commissions or bonuses.  Yet this position remains quite unique with regards to pay.  I actually prefer it, probably due to interaction with clients, the creativity in marketing, the pay when things are going well - in essence, being an independent contractor.
