Tri the Beach | Huntington Beach Triathlon | April, 2013
The Huntington Beach Triathlon was held yesterday at Huntington State Beach. The weather was clear and nice. There was a swell yesterday and the waves were about 5 feet. The Huntington Beach Triathlon consisted of a 500 yard swim, 10 mile bike ride and a 2.5 mile beach run (much of it in soft sand).
My daughter Heather Thomson participated in this event and ended up coming in 2nd Place in her age group. Congratulations Heather. You inspire me!!
There were reported approximately 80 rescues during this event due to the waves. There were apparently 14 lifeguards on duty, the rescue boat, personal water craft, and three permanent lifeguards had to be called in to assist with rescues.
One entrant I spoke to did not make it out in the swim, and she explained she had never swam in the ocean before. Ocean swimming is vastly different from pool swimming.
I find it to be very inspirational watching everyone compete in this event. There is rigorous preparation, not only physically but mentally. I am sure it must be intimidating to run into a cold ocean with large waves . . . and yet they did. It is a reminder that whatever you set out to do, whether it be a triathlon, 5K or even a marathon , it is a task that can be achieved. This requires dedication, and I do respect and admire that with these incredible atheletes.
Congratulations to all who participated in this event, and to those who finished also! Great job!
