Steamboat Springs Planning for the Future

Steamboat Springs Planning for the Future

I am continually impressed with how the Steamboat Springs community plans for the future and  thinks long-term. I was reading the Steamboat Today this morning and saw that the City of Steamboat was evaluating what to do with the 1% lodging tax they collect.  Annually, this tax generates between $650,000 and $800,000. What was interesting to me was how progressive and well, just neat, that my neighbors have voted in this tax and attempt to use it wisely. The projects that are up for consideration are all projects that will greatly benefit our town. And these aren’t just infrastructure or boring things like that. These projects will directly benefit the locals and visitors alike for the long-term.

Four applicants made their presentations and four more are scheduled. The four that have already made their presentations were:

- Old Town Hot Springs

- Haymaker Golf Course

- Public Open Space Acquisition

- Friends of the Yampa

Old town Hot Springs Athletic Facility - “Your non-profit Heart of the Community”   is the busiest and most popular club we have in town. There are numerous naturally heated pools, waterslides, exercise rooms, and weight rooms open to the public and members.  It is the gateway to the city and does play a key component to the Steamboat active lifestyle for both locals and guests

Haymaker Golf Course -  Owned by the City of Steamboat, this too is one of the many highlights of the Steamboat lifestyle. Haymaker was the first Colorado golf course to obtain the Audubon International Signature certification. This award protects the environment and the heritage of the sport.

Open Space Acquisition -  Need I say more?

Friends of the Yampa -  “A river advocacy group based on one common passion, a love for the Yampa River” they just said that so well, I had to quote it. The Yampa River runs straight through our town and the recreational opportunities abound.

The next four applicants are:

- Steamboat Springs Trail Alliance

- Howelsen Hill Sports Complex

- Friends of the Chief

- Downtown Revitalization Committee

So the conversation about taxing and the applications etc etc is not really why I am writing this - you can go read the newspaper on that.  It is because of the dedication our community has. It impresses me we can focus our time and money on creating a lifestyle, a community, an atmosphere that will benefit everyone for the long haul.

Steamboat doesn't always have such foresight. But yes, it's steps in the right direction.

You have a great farmers market in your home town.  I know it well. I'm there once a year visiting family.
