Parents can be excited about choosing from the International Baccalaureate IB
schools in Colorado Springs because of "Open Enrollment", which is the option for Colorado students to enroll in their school of choice other than their assigned "neighborhood school."
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) was founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 as a non-profit educational foundation. The premise is a standardized curriculum that prepares students for higher learning and global living. Initially the program was exclusively housed in private schools, but now more than half of participating schools (like IB schools in Colorado Springs) are public schools. Public school districts recognize the appeal that IB has to parents who want to academically challenge their children without breaking the bank on private school tuition.
Because IB is standardized on a global level, it's recognized and accepted widely by many first tier universities. This is Harvard's policy:
"Students who have earned the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma with a grade of 7 on at least three Higher Level examinations may qualify for Advanced Standing. Students wishing to use IB exams for Advanced Standing should request that the IB Americas' office send an official IB transcript directly to Harvard."
As the parent of a child who attended a public IB high school, I can attest to the robust curriculum. Students in IB are segregated unto themselves, and much more is expected of them than the routine high school schedule. This is particularly nice for students of IB schools in Colorado Springs, because they can learn surrounded by like minded people. These kids are motivated, they want to be in class, and typically they don't have time for juvenile antics. The academic foundation that our daughter received in IB served her in good stead. She went on to graduate (after 4 years on the Dean's list) from the United States Air Force Academy.
IB is a 4 level program:
- The IB Primary Years Program, for students aged 3 to 12, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.
- The IB Middle Years Program, for students aged 11 to 16, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and to become critical and reflective thinkers.
- The IB Diploma Program, for students aged 16 to 19, is an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepares students for success at university and beyond.
- The IB Career-related Certificate, for students aged 16 to 19, is the newest offering from the IB. The IBCC incorporates the vision and educational principles of the IB Programs into a unique offering specifically designed for students who wish to engage in career-related learning.
You can choose an IB school in Colorado Springs from the earliest opportunity, or wait until high school to join in. However, waiting until high school will be challenging for the student who hasn't developed strong, self-paced study habits.
