Hello from Normandy or Normandie and Hello from Brittany or Bretagne.. I am confused now, help !!!

Normandy flag

Being Dutch from origin and hence happy with my language skills (nothing snotty here :-) ) I find myself now in a terrible agonizing conflict of interests. The French language is beautiful - the language of Molière - sings through the phrases, and is one to preserve. France in its own right named its beautiful regions keeping history in tact.

So when I drive back home and see a sign "Bienvenue en Normandie" (Welcome in Normandie) it makes me proud. But history has made it complicated : king Henry II and Eleonor of Aquitaine from England where also King and Queen of France, and hence had a great influence on the language. So in the Anglophone countries, Normandie has changed into Normandy.

Brittany flag

Let's make a big step further : The region of Bretagne has an historical old link to the old celtic part of Britain, Wales and Ireland. Go figure : Bretagne, Britain ... Brittany.

So my big conflict is a the moment when I am so eager to share these stunning regions with my readers : Do I use the Anglophone name of the region or do I (stubbornly) stick to their original historicaly merited french names ??

Normandie v Normandy

Bretagne v Brittany

I am in agony, torn up, what to do - dear readers, please help !!

Interesting dilemma and not one most of us in the US face.  I'd say do what feels the most comfortable for you.

Hi Cindy - thanks for your comment, however the dilemma also touches the SEO of the blogposts. What would the anglophone client be typing in on Google ?

Maybe for the sake of the readership, you should use the Anglophone names. That's just my thought.
