JRR TOLKIEN'S The Lord of the Rings is an exceedingly well known and loved trilogy that arguably put the genre of fantasy fiction on the map. Few modern day authors have accomplished the depth and scope that is the world of JRR Tolkien. Tolkien published many works including The Silmarillion and The Hobbit but it is the LOTR series that catches the majority of peoples imaginations as masterful and unforgettable.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy captured my imagination and interest with a fervor that few books ever could or have. It is certainly the only one of a Fantastical nature to have done so. The very depth of Tolkien's world is unrivaled in many respects. It is said that he desired to make an English Folk Tale that was truly English and not stolen from other nations stories as was Arthur and his round table. He seems to have pored his every talent into creating the mythology, including that of language. As a linguist he went further than most authors by actually creating new languages that correspond with the races of men, elves, orcs and other peoples of middle earth within his narrative. For instance, a Tolkien fanatic could choose to learn Elvish is he or she so wished. There are also many other volumes, many of which where published after his death, that go into extensive and meticulous detail about the history and other aspects of the world that he created in The Lord of the Rings and other stories. They remind me some what of The Iliad and like works as regards their scope and detail. I must also say something of his ingenious prose. He produces an expert flow of words that simply lift the text right out of the book and into the imagination, if not the heart itself.  There are so many unforgettable passages and keen use of language throughout the books that one can not help but want to read more and more. I find LOTR to be particularly relaxing to me and I even listen to it in the car sometimes as I never tire of the story no matter how many times I read it.

Perhaps some consider LOTR to be a children's story, but whatever the opinion, I heartily recommend the trilogy to any one that enjoys a book that can make the English language beautiful.

Shellee, I just finished reading the Lord of the Rings the second time around.  The first time it was all kind of confusing to me.  The second time was TOTALLY enjoyable.  When we went to see my daughter in New York a couple of weeks ago we then watched the trilogy.  They stayed fairly true to the books although made some romantic changes.  Really nothing that changed the story though.

I think they did an excellent job considering the scope of the book they where taking on to adapt to film. I love the films and watch them often. My little one loves all the monsters in particular shelob. As to romnce, most of the Arwen&Aragorn material came from the appendices of ROTK the book and other stories of Tolkien.

I did not realize that the extra romance came from something he had wrote.  I like that.  My daughter has me reading Mr. Noreell and Jonathon Strange when I finish it I will check out some of Tolkiens other books.  I read a short story that she had when I was in New York visiting her. I actually read it while we were riding on the subway but it made me want to read more of his writings.

That sounds like a great idea to me... but a word of caution, some of the books released after his death by Chris Tolkien his son are a little heavy. A few of them are quite dry and read like encyclopedias of his world in a way. I don't believe that many of these works you can find of his now where ever intended for publication. The hobbit is the most similar in style to the Lord of the Rings and you are absolutely sure to enjoy that one. The Silmarillion is a great narrative of how his Middle Earth and people came to be. It also speaks of Luthien and Beren, and elf maiden who gives her love to a man. It  is a good book but it took me reading several passages over again before catching on to some of their meanings. There are others of interest as well but just be sure to check out the back before buying to make sure the story is something that catches you. Enjoy!

Shellee - LOTR is one of the few pieces of literature that made a successful transition to the large screen. As far as books that captured my imagination and interest, I haven't found anything to top Stephen King's The Dark Tower series.

Debbie- Wow your daughter and i would get along marvelously as i love Tolkien well myself. Though, having read everything he wrote, she is much more ambitious than I!
