There’s a New Guy in Town

I heard the sounds of a new bird in the yard this morning with an unusual bird call. Saw this guy hanging around with the Red Finches and hogging the bird feeders.

There’s a New Guy in Town This male bird is called a Red-Winged Blackbird. Glossy-black males have scarlet-and-yellow shoulder patches they can puff up or hide depending on how confident they feel.

Male Red-winged Blackbirds do everything they can to get noticed, sitting on high perches and belting out their ‘conk-la-ree’ song all day long.

There’s a New Guy in Town

Here is a typical Red Finch, so thin and pale. They look like they had a tough winter so I am filling the feeders several times a day.

We get lots of the red-winged blackbirds here, but fewer of the finches you showed. I love watching the difference birds as the seasons change. At the moment the American robins are prevalent.

Hi Noah,

I am totally interested in nature photos of birds, animals, insects, critters, landscapes and lunar but birds are pretty much my favorites. Hummingbirds were a big challenge so I have worked on taking them for 2 years and have a great new camera Cannon Rebel EOS T2i. The camera is better at taking photos than I am. But thanks for stopping and the nice comments.

Hi Jeannie and Ralph,

I guess it might be a Cassin's Finch and maybe that is why it looks so much smaller and thinner that the Red Finch. I think the Red Winged Blackbird has such a great chirping sound. I heard it this morning and knew there was a new specie in my yard. I am not sure if it is just passing through or planning to stay the season.

He has very pretty colors doesn't he? At first I thought it was a crow looking for something in the yard and only after it went to the feeder that I realized it wasn't a crow.

Hi Jimmy,

I like to blur the backgrounds sometimes to make it look different. I think this extremely cold winter made it harder for birds to find food. We have a lot of them who stick around in Southern California as it is usually warmer but so many plants and bugs froze this winter.

When I went to Philadelphia I saw a lot of American Robins as I love their coloring. In Lancaster I saw a lot of different species too.

Yes he is a handsome guy with with hot colors on his shoulders. No wonder he is so proud and pumps up those colors. I just noticed he is back and looking for food this morning so I better fill the feeders before I go to work.

I cannot remember seeing this bird at all in my area so maybe he likes our climate. Who knows but i am enjoying seeing him coming around and he has a very unusual chirp so I can hear him a mile away.

That is great! I never noticed nature until I went to Alaska and there I fell in love with the animals, birds, wildflowers and all the beautiful sites. So when I joined AR, I loved William Johnson's photos and thought I would love to take bird photos and so I started. I have been to Philly twice and took some good bird photos there which is sort of in your area. Here is an American Robin I took in front of Independence Hall.

The birds arrived in my neighborhood in full force, early this season. And, I'm noticing a couple of species I haven't seen in years. The redwinged blackbirds were quite common when I was a kid. But, we went a couple of decades having them seem quite rare. However, they are beginning to show up more in rural areas around Sacramento.

Same here as I am seeing new species every day. Today I saw a purple turtle dove and it was huge. I do not know where they are coming from but maybe they like our early spring.

They are mad at me right now as I have not filled the feeders but they make sure a mess on the ground so I give them a day to clean up the ground and then I refill it. Thanks for stopping and liking my photos. He is a handsome dude isn't he?
