Change versus experience

Hello all,

I resisted writing on politics, but this is one special election this year. There are many issues facing our country and the next President. I like watching the process (the politics get irritating at times), but there is one thing I don't understand - what qualifies as experience? This has become Hillary Clinton's rallying cry. I found it puzzling that the media has bought into this argument without asking for details. The only elected office she has held has been a United Stated Senator for 7 years. If experience counts so much, Bill Richardson or Dennis Kucinich should be the nominee. Is she talking about life experience? Then the oldest person should be the nominee. Slate magazine has there own take on this here.

And what about change? Mrs. Clinton would be the first woman president and Barrack Obama would be the first African-American president. Either would bring a change of direction for our country. Both champion a variety of liberal ideas and programs. But John McCain would be a change from President Bush (I really don't think they like each other). How much change do we want and what kind of change?

Whoever you support and vote for, study their ideas and views. Get past the campaign promises and rhetoric. How are they going to create jobs? What are they going to do about global warming? What should they do about the mortgage mess?  How much is all this going to cost? Campaign slogans are nice, but as they say the devil's in the details.

Joe,  This time around I've spent a lot of time getting to know the candidates.  Obama or Clinton would probably make an excellent choice.  McCain promises troops in iraq for another 100 years.  Had enough of the Republicans !  I liked John Edwards best of all of them but he never eally got much traction.  Probably see Clinton/obama as the ticket.

I think the most change for the most peopole would have come from Dennis Kucinich, maybe in a few years we will be ready for him

I agree with you Bill.  Clinton/Obama would be pretty cool!

I am not advocating Clinton / Obama or vice versa. Clinton keeps talking about her experience when she only has 2 more years in public office than Obama. The media has let her get away with this claim without questioning it.

In regards to McCain, this is what he said:

Last month, at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, a crowd member asked McCain about a Bush statement that troops could stay in Iraq for 50 years.

"Maybe 100," McCain replied. "As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, it's fine with me and I hope it would be fine with you if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al Qaeda is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day."

He is not advocating a continued war in Iraq, but a stabilizing presence like we had in Japan or Germany after WWII. This is why I urge voters to do your own research and do not rely on the media sound bites for accurate information.

I agree Joe. It is our right to vote, but our duty to know the candidates and what they stand for. Not just to believe what we hear about them in the media.
