Castle Island, Roscommon, Ireland

Lough Key is in the northeast of Connacht, near Boyle. The lough is named after Ce', a druid who drowned when the lake was created, according to legend. The castle is known as MacDermott's, or McGreevys, Castle.

The Annals of Loch Cé report that the castle was burned down in 1187 by lightning.

During the conquest of Connacht in 1235, the castle came under siege by 500 knights, a raft-mounted catapult and fire ships.

A poem to the MacDermot King of Moylurg (1421-1458) tells the story of the Hag of Loch Ce who lived on the island for a year, and laid upon the MacDermot family the obligation of perpetual hospitality.

Brad, this is a wonderful picture of Castle Island.  I have had the good fortune to travel to Ireland; and, there is much that made e speechless.

Thanks, Captain! All my best for a great day to you, too.

Pat and Steve, I'm so glad you like it.  The place has quite a history, and it doesn't all fit here, but I broke the silence to relate a few details.

Hi Brad - Beautiful photo, and a great looking castle, though even with perpetual hospitality, it doesn't look ready for guests right now. Ireland is on our list and we're hoping to get there next year - I'd love to see this in person.

Good morning, Brad -- wonderful photo!  Great background information.   I love Dick Greenberg's thoughts on the castle's perpetual hospitality.   I could see the real estate headline;   Castle Needs Just a bit of TLC

Have a great Sunday.

Thanks Dick and Michael.  It's a beautiful wreck.  Not ready for guests.  Even the folly castle burned to the ground just before the Second World War.  Good wall, though, right?

That's an almost eerie picture.  I am sure it looks totally different with a blue sky and sunshine.

A soggy ghost, Sharon. Sitting next to the Lady of the Lake.  bwahaha

Thanks, John. Everyone needs a castle. I would prefer Castle Stalker, but that's for another day.
