Starting January 26, it's party time in St. Paul, Minnesota!  The Ringling Bros. circus used to proclaim itself the biggest show on earth.  Well, St. Paul is proclaiming its Winter Carnival to be the biggest and oldest winter festival in the nation having carried on the tradition since 1886!  Rumor, legend, and fantasy surround the carnival starting with its inception in 1886 supposedly the result of a slur made by an eastern reporter about Minnesota's weather being uninhabitable.  The Legend explains the true purpose of the carnival:  the Vulcan King and his Krewe chase away King Boreas, the king of the winter winds.  The Vulcans are notorious and have even been sued for sexual harassment much to their chagrin.  They are kings of the reveler bad guys.  The carnival lasts for 10 days and is the equivalent of our Mardi Gras in its celebration and crowd appeal.  Attractions include the ice palace, a giant snow slide, an ice maze, Klondike Kate performances (another legend brought to life), treasure hunts at the Capitol, medallion hunts in the city based on clues published in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, car races on Lake Phalen, concerts, a hot dish tent, ice and snow sculpture contests, and much more.  Even when the temperatures are frigid, the crowds come to see the Ice Palace light show (they are not built every year) and to tour a castle every bit as wonderful as the one in Superman's movie.  Oh, and not to be forgotten, the Winter Carnival button can be purchased for only $5 to receive discounts and entrance to some affairs!

Congrats on being number 1 in minnesota!  I think you will find that it will be easy to keep your lead. :)  I really need to stay focused on my real blog.  I have been asked to write one post for active rain and I will probably do it sometime next week.  It should not be hard for you to slam out a few more so that your lead is nice and big. :)

Now I was hoping for some more melodrama than that for unseating my arch rival, Her Majesty Herself, from being the first place Active Rain blogger in Minnesota!

Tiaras aside, lol, I hope King Boreas can chase away Orion whom I dislike with a passion so we can get to Spring. This was a cool read Ms. Erickson, Queen of MN.

Carole, now that we finally have cool temperatures and snow, we Minnesotans are looking forward to playing in our winter!  We're not ready for spring just yet!  Bonnie

I remember you blogging about this on your original Snippets blog last year.  I didn't remember it being  so similar to Mardi Gras with Krewe's etc. Please tell me it is not the same calendar ... you don't have to I ran down to look at a church calendar... Fat Tuesday is the 20th of February...  I was worried.

Maureen, It’s not the same dates as Mardi Gras, but the same kind of fun and revelry.  It just hasn’t been the focus of national attention yet!  Bonnie

Hi...we live in Lakeville and have been in Minnesota for 5 years now...why isn't the ice castle build every year?? Would it be due to weather?? Someone told us it's only there once every 4 years but we've seen it a few times since we've been out here!!..................Thanks!

Nancy, I've wondered the same thing.  When I lived on the other side of the river (northwest suburbs), I thought the ice castle was built on a regular basis, i.e., every 4 years.  I had to research to find out that the castle is privately funded and is only built when the funding is available from a sponsor.  There was a huge castle about 5 years ago which had an entry fee.  I was offended by the charge.  Since I assumed the castle was subsidized by the city, I thought it bothersome that a fee was charged.  Researching your question helped me become a better informed citizen and more sympathetic to the erratic building program and the fees charged!
