"The One Thing"
A couple of weeks ago I attended "The One Thing" book tour here in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jay Papasan did a fantastic job. The time flew by and I couldn't wait to get home and read the book. It seemed that it was just what I needed at that time in my life.
City Slickers
To my surprised the book tour started out with a segment taken from one of my all time favorite movies, City Slickers. It stars Billy Crystal. and I remember the first time I watched City Slickers in 1991 how this segment stuck with me even then. Here is a segment from the movie/book "Curly, the gritty cowboy player by the late Jack Palance, and city slicker Mitch, played by Billy Crystal, leave the group to search for stray cattle. Although they had clashed for most of the movie, riding along together they finally connect over a conversation about life. Suddenly, Curly reins his horse to a stop and turns in his saddle to face Mitch.
Curly: Do you know what the secert to life is?
Mitch: No. What?
Curly: This. (He holds up one finger.)
Mitch: Your finger?
Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don't mean sh*t.
Mitch: That's great, but what's the "one thing".
Curly: That's what you've got to figure out
So What's MY/Your One Thing?
The more I thought about what my One Thing is, the more I realize that I had no clue. But "The One Thing" really spelled it out for me. I was making it too complicated, I had to think small. I don't have to move mountains I just have to do one thing and do it really, really good, consistently.
Different Aspects of My Life
"The One Thing" book helped me realize that I have different aspects and goals in my life. God for instances is important and comes first in my life, but my one thing with God is not my one thing with my work, or family, they are different. So is it possible for me to have one thing I am working toward in each area of my life? Chapter 11 "The Success Habit" answered that for me.
The Journey
Again from the book, "One step at a time". It didn't take me long to realize that "The One Thing" is not something to add to my life that will complicate it. After all complicating my life is the last thing I need. I need to simplify my life and doing it one step at a time makes a lot more sense to me.
