Social Media has a new role-The Public's Eyes & Ears for News Events

A week ago, a highly respected marathon in Boston, Mass. turned into one of the most catastrophic events in US history. People were confused, lost, injured, separated from others, and social media proved to be a big help.

Social Media has a new role…The Public's Eyes and Ears for News Events

Google, Facebook and Twitter immediately took over when spectators and marathon runners began grabbing their cell phones to make calls, to take video footage, shot pictures to send to social media sites and to go to the internet and find out any news.

The Google website had a special site available up almost immediately for people who were lost and for people who checked in to say they were OK. This must have been a great relief to friends and loved ones who were panicked.

Social Media has a new role…The Public's Eyes and Ears for News EventsSmartphones- As runners and spectators started taking footage and pictures to send to Facebook and Twitter, to share the events almost immediately after they happened. This footage helped solve the crime within days vs. typically taking weeks to months.

Texting- Texting is an immediate communication and is normally quicker than even making a phone call. When the phone lines are overrun with callers, texting still goes through. In most of the pictures seen, everyone is either talking or texting on their phones.

Social Media has a new role…The Public's Eyes and Ears for News Events

Local law enforcement and federal agencies started asking for cell phone and video camera users to send copies to them so they could determine what happened and help identify the suspects.

Law enforcement started going through the footage, searching social media websites and viewing camera footage from businesses and intersections.

Social Media has a new role…The Public's Eyes and Ears for News EventsLaw Enforcement decided to release the photos of the two suspects and within 37 minutes later, people started calling in as they recognized them. This was amazing and a very smart move on behalf of law enforcement as they wait and listen instead.

GPS- A man was carjacked, but his cell phone was left in the backseat of the car with GPS capabilities so law enforcement located the vehicle almost immediately.

Social Media has a new role…The Public's Eyes and Ears for News EventsPublic Loudspeaker-While watching television for the next few days, we started hearing comments like “Boston PD just tweeted that ………”, “DEA just tweeted……” No matter what channel you were watching, viewers started hearing about how social media was assisting the public and law enforcement.

Getting up to the minute updates from the internet was available and millions knew what had just occurred. Thousands of sites had video footage and photos

The Public's Eyes and Ears for News EventsDigital Fingerprints-This can be a positive or negative situation as several cell phone users wrongly identified people as possible suspects so unfortunately wrong information will show up for years and years. It is important to make sure you have the facts before publishing photos and accusations.

The Public's Eyes and Ears for News EventsSocial Media is mostly for Happy Events- Unfortunately this was a horrible event and I am glad to report that most social media websites are usually full of happy events; parties, weddings, eating out, sporting events, school events,  on a trip, baby pictures, etc. It is a quick way to send a photo out telling all your friends that this exciting event just occurred in your life.

But even in negative situations, a cell phone is a way to call 9-1-1, a rescue from the mountains, an earthquake, a fire, a stranded motorist, and clearly you have a better chance of receiving help faster than before.

Statistics show over 85% of people in the US own a cell phone and over 40% are smart phones. Availability and lower rates are a big reason for the popularity and necessity. Who would want to be without a cell phone nowadays?

Social Media, Cell Phones, and the internet have shown to be a great tool for the public and law enforcement and hundreds of thousands of social bloggers are out there to get the facts out for the public. Sites like ActiveRain, LinkedIn and Wordpress are a great way to network with other bloggers and the public.

Clearly the roles of social media have changed and never will they go back the way they were. Today they are the eyes and ears of the sportscasters, the news media stations and the law enforcement. Most of us would never think of going out without our cell phone or iPad.

Kristin- love this.  Came over from Pat's weekly post and I'm glad she included it.  I had jury duty the day you posted it.  It is truly amazing how Social Media played such a big part in spreading information about the Boston Marathon bombing  as well as capturing the suspect.  And, as with all of our wonderful inventions (like driving a car) with this comes responsibility.

Hi Kristin,

Thanks for stopping by and I worked on this in my mind for a week or more. I kept seeing footage of people on cell phones and hearing about law enforcement tweeting. I am sure these tools were already working in other emergencies but this one really hit home for most of us all over the US. I see social media as a positive tool.

Hi Kathy,

Yes every state has type of law regarding texting and talking on a cell phone. In CA, we can only use a hands free device...thank goodness my car has one as I get a lot of business done while driving. But thanks for stopping by and I hope your jury duty was a positive experience. In the last few years of my government job, I took care of jurors and it was a fun experience mostly.

Great post and Oh so true. In this instance it helped catch the bombers quickly. Social media is changing the world some for the good and some not so good. privacy is being chipped away gradually. But it is mostly our fault if we use the media and put ourselves out to the world.

Hi Helen and Larry,

You are absolutely right as we put our kids photos, their schools, dance studios and post while we are on vacation and unfortunately that causes predators to get into our business and wreck havoc. Thanks for stopping by and Happy Sunday.

I was just incredible the short period of time it took to identify, track and catch the bombers.  Just incredible.  But just like you say, we have to be very careful not to contribute to the internet's misinformation.

Hi Clarita,

Exactly, there is good and bad results from the internet and social media. Sometimes someone has to become a victim before they realize not to put stuff out there. Thanks for stopping and hope your Sunday has been terrific.

Thanks Kristen....this was pretty amazing at how Social Media played such a role.   There was good and bad...what annoyed me was the fact that CBS posted that if folks were listening to police scanners....to not post what they heard on Social Media sites....good grief!!!   I guess you always get some who are clue less....but all in all Social Media played a very valuable role!

Hi Deborah,

I heard news reporters saying my law enforcement contact just called me and said........which clearly shouldn't have been put on the TV and internet to millions of people while they were on stakeout. And yes police scanners too but so many now have ear pieces so the public is less likely to hear confidential transmissions. We should have common sense and let the police and FEDS get the job done and then they will tell us about it. I think that way too much goes out on TV anyway as our country's security is always at risk. Thanks for stopping and I loved your comments.

Hi, Kristin.  What a True Statement!  Social Media has changed everything.  We now have "On the Scene Reporters" the instant something is happening.

Hi Kristin, Social media has a role to play in society but some times it gets Too involved and a lot of disinformation is passed on and people buy into as gospel. Instant news as it happens even if incomplete or not accurate, :-)

I like that term "on the scene reporters". Life just moves so fast nowadays and we expect instant fax, emails, and internet news.

Hi William,

I recall there was a girl identified as one of the bombers and I still don't know why they thought she was but it was a terrible thing to be accused of. Hard to live it down when it is all over the news and and they even had her name typed on the bottom.

Kristin, being a resident of Boston suburb - within 20 miles of where all the action was - it was a sigh of relief when everything ended.

And your post is a great testimonial of how social media can help solve crime! We owe a lot to them.

I was close to the bombing in a number of ways. I see you noticed that the initial photos gave people the chance to say, "Hey, those guys are in the background in my photos", or something like that, and call the FBI and text them to them, so that great, clear photos of the bombers were available a few hours later.

Hi Brad,

It was remarkable that the public identified the bombers within 37 minutes after releasing their photos and that many had noticed odd things in their photos right after the incident. People help law enforcement by observations and videos helped too. Glad you were OK.
