We are now in the character traits of happy people that are difficult to do. This is a trait that to me speaks of a couple of things. It isn't just speaking well of others, it is also the inverse, not speaking ill of others! It today's society both of these is becoming increasingly difficult. If you have ever talked to someone who is always in a good mood or always happy, they never seem to have a bad word to say about anyone. I have been fortunate to know people like this, and it is always refreshing to be in their presence.
Our society seems to want to find the flaws that people have. Entire "news" agencies have made a lot of money digging up dirt on people. Whether it is politicians, celebrities, or people who just seem to "good to be true", these agencies want to find any and all of the skeletons in their closets. This is just wrong! Everyone has flaws, it is called being a human being. Instead of finding out what people do wrong, shouldn't we be extolling what it is that they are doing well! One of the most tired and worn out phrases in the modern venacular is the "have you heard about ..." clause.
We as Realtors have a Code of Ethics which we should abide by. One part of this is that we shouldn't say anything disparaging about another Realtor. Believe me, I know Realtors out there who make it very difficult to adhere to this part of the Code. What I am attempting to say is we should talk about what they do well! I am reminded a story that my father told me, when he was a small child he and my grandmother were at her parents house for a quilting bee. The ladies in that small town began talking about "poor Mrs. So and So, her husband was absolutely worthless, how terrible she had it being married to him. My father was out on the front porch with his grandfather. His grandfather, listened quietly, then stuck his head in the screen door and said, "I don't know that he is worthless, have you ever heard that man whistle? He is the finest whistler I have ever heard. He can whistle almost any tune that you can think of."
The point being if we look hard enough, we can find something good to say about someone. It isn't always easy, and it certainly isn't as tantalizing as the dirty gossip, but in the long run we will be better for it. The thing about our propensity to share everyone else's dirty laundry opens our closets and our dirty laundry as well. I mentioned knowing people who never speak ill of anyone, the thing is, I have never heard anyone speak ill of them either! It is more than that, who will trust you with anything, however small if they know that you're willing to share gossip with other people? I know that there are people who I guard everything that I say when I am near them. I never know how my words may be twisted and used against me.
I believe that this World could use as much good news and positive stories as we can come up with. I know that it can use a lot more kindness, and what is speaking well of others if it isn't being kind? What would the world be without gossip? I don't know, but I would bet it would be as boring as some would have us believe. Seek the best in people, extoll their virtues and keep their secrets, it won't be easy, but you will be happier by doing so. I am fortunate, I have a friend in whom I can confide anything. This person won't let me get away with anything, but is still a great ear, one who I trust. How much does everyone need a person like this? I can't help but think almost everyone! Be that type of person, and don't worry, be happy!
