I've had an idea about how I might shoot a local water tower that was recently repainted.  This Saturday I finally had the chance to get the shot I was looking for.

water tower

So this got me to thinking about shooting various landmarks in my area in helping to identify the location of listings.

Hi Lee:

**Nice photo, with that sunset.**   Those palm trees, make it look like it is located in California.  Fresno has some very  unique Community Landmarks.  We have a very old brick style water tower, that is a historical landmark. We also have one that is something like yours.

Sending Smiles To You....  Myrna :) :) :)  :(o_o):

Lee, it is always interesting how the very landmarks that we rely on to direct newcomers, really define a community and give it a unique character. Good photo, and great blog. Thank you for sharing with us!

Hi Lee,

It was well worth the wait as it is a beautiful shot of the trees at sunset and like the horse logo on the tower. It is a good sign in a community when they care enough to paint the water towers.

Paul, it's a composite of two photos, one taken at sunrise and one at sunset.  I don't remember specific exposure settings, but I did shoot in manual.  I'm pretty sure both were shot at ISO 200.  I probably used something like f/8 and dialed the shutter speed until the exposure needle was in the middle.  Judging by the sharpness of the palm leaves, I would guess shutter speed was 1/30 or faster.

The camera was on a tripod and the scene is static so there isn't much concern about shutter speed.  I used a prime lens so I wouldn't accidentally change the focal length and mess up the merge of the two photos.  I then put the camera in the exact same position and lined the center focus point at the same place on the tower.  This made lining up the two photos pretty easy.

I hope this helps.

I just looked it up.  The morning shot was 1/320 sec at f/9.0, ISO 200.  The evening shot was 1/250 sec at f/4.0, ISO 200.  Both shot with the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G.
